Amber Museum in Puerto Plata
The Dominican Amber Museum is one of the most visited places in Puerto Plata. Inside, it hosts one of the biggest resin exhibitions in the Dominican Republic. The country has the most important amber deposits in the world; moreover, blue, green or warm honey colours are unique from this area due to its volcanic activity.
Here, you can discover the history of this vegetal-origin precious stone. One of the most important stones of this museum is a 40 cm lizard conserved inside a piece of amber. This resin can hold prehistoric fossils of plants and little animals on its inside due to its sticky nature, that turns this stone in subject of study. It is said that Steven Spielberg was inspired by this museum when he was working on his famous film Jurassic Park.
Sosua, the paradise terrestial with picturesque beaches and beautiful tropical nature
Sosua is everything you want a beach town to be. Clear waters teem with coral, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Above sea level you’ll find multicolored sands lined with beach shacks. This small enclave of the Dominican Republic was once a haven for Jewish refugees. Historic sites and synagogues offer great perspective on Sosua’s postwar identity. On a lighter note, a community of ex-pats helps fuel a boisterous, international nightlife scene.
At the 1938 Evian Conference, Rafael Trujillo offered to accept up to 100,000 Jewish refugees; about 800 German and Austrian Jewish refugees received visas issued by the Dominican government between 1940 and 1945 (see Dominican Jews) and settled in Sosúa.[4] The government provided them with land and resources with which they created a dairy and cheese factory, named Productos Sosúa[5] still in existence today. Descendants of the original settlers still live in Sosúa, where they maintain a synagogue and a museum.
The town was little known until tourism took off in the island in the mid 1980s.
Sosúa Bay attracts many water sports enthusiast, including snorkelers and divers because of its sheltered, calm waters, diverse species of fish and intricate reef structures. In the winter, whale watching is also a popular tourist activity in Sosúa Bay.
Recently, naturally occurring beach nourishment has created a new beach just north of Sosúa Bay, depositing sand where there were previously only sheer rock cliffs. The beach is called Playa Alicia.
There are several other beaches, Sosua Beach, which is a crescent-shaped bay protected by coral formations. Sosúa's other beaches are Waterfront (Playa Alicia), Paradise beach (actually shifts on and off every several months), Playa Imbert and Playa Chiquita. Waterfront beach is just 15–16 years old, created after a storm around 2002.
During the day, the Sosua Beach is the ideal destination for those looking to relax, swim, or sober up from a night of drunken debauchery. The residents are very friendly and are always willing to give a hand.
Puerto Plata International Airport is actually much closer to Sosua than it is to Puerto Plata, at about 7 Km away. The taxi fare from the airport is fixed at $25-35 US per car with little to no room for negotiation when coming from the airport. Some drivers will ask for $20US per person. Walk away from them and look for an honest driver
Caribe Tours busses get you from Sosua to Santo Domingo in about 5 hours. It stops along the way in all the major cities and towns (about 5 Stops). Buses are comfortable, modern, air conditioned with Movies and Restroom. Cost is about RD$330-400 pesos (as of November 2017) for a one way ticket. Sosua is the last stop on the Santo Domingo - Sosua route. The Caribe Tours bus station is along the main highway just at the entrance to the Charamicos section of town. Buses currently (09/2012) leave every hour till 19:00 on the :, beginning at 5:20 am, from Sosua, and every hour on the hour from Santo Domingo.
The cheapest way to move between Sosua and the surrounding cities and towns of Puerto Plata, Cabarete and Rio San Juan, as well as the tourist resorts in between, is by guagua (Caribbean Spanish slang for bus), which are small mini-vans operating on the main highway between Puerto Plata and Rio San Juan. At peak hours they pass every five or ten minutes. Short distances (i.e., Sosua to Cabarete) should cost no more than twenty pesos to Cabarete, to 30 pesos to Puerto Plata.
