Easter in Georgia

Easter is a very important festival for Orthodox Christian world. Its celebration in Georgia is special.
Easter is preceded by Passion Week. In more than 10 000 churches special services are held on each seven days of the week. The services are dedicated to the remembrance of Christ`s last days of life.
Good Friday is the hardest day for all Orthodox Christians. The very important and interesting ceremony of Deposition of Christ is conducted in the churches. This symbolizes human death of Christ, his descent from the cross and burial.
Each family paints the eggs in red on Good Friday, also connected with Crucifixion of Jesus.
On the evening of Holly Saturday just before Easter comes, all churches conduct services of worship. Churches are crowded, often making it difficult to access them.
A lot of people attend the special Easter Service conducted by Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II in the central church of Tbilisi.

On Easter Georgians greet each other with the words “Christ is Risen!” instead of saying “hello”. The answer comes “Indeed”. On this day the doors of all houses are open to guests. One can taste home-made P***a (Easter cake) and Easter red eggs in addition to other varied dishes made of meat/fish and also traditional Khachapuri and lobiani.
On the next day which is dedicated to the remembrance of the dead, Georgians visit graves of their ancestors to honor their memory.

Uflistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town in eastern Georgia, some 10 kilometers east of the town of Gori, Shida Kartli.
Built on a high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River, it contains various structures dating from the Early Bronze Age to the Late Middle Ages.

Uflistsikhe is identified by archaeologists as one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia. Strategically located in the heartland of ancient kingdom of Kartli, it emerged as a major political and religious center of the country. With the Christianization of Kartli early in the 4th century, Uflistsikhe seems to have declined in its importance and lost its strength. During the battles for uniting Georgia (9th – 10th centuries) the weakened city was constantly changing its owners. After liberating Tbilisi and uniting Georgia, Uflistskihe almost completely lost its value. The city stopped its existence in 13th century during Mongol raids and after that was only used as a temporary shelter by the locals.

The Uplistsikhe complex can tentatively be divided into three parts: south (lower), middle (central) and north (upper) covering an area of approximately 8 hectares. The middle part is the largest, contains a bulk of the Uplistsikhe rock-cut structures, and is connected to the southern part via a narrow rock-cut pass and a tunnel. Narrow alleys and sometimes staircases radiate from the central "street" to the different structures.
At the summit of the complex is a Christian basilica built of stone and brick in the 9th-10th centuries. Archaeological excavations have discovered numerous artifacts of different periods, including gold, silver and bronze jewellery, and samples of ceramics and sculptures. Many of these artifacts are in the safekeeping of the National Museum in Tbilisi.
Several parts of the most vulnerable areas were completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1920. The Uplistsikhe cave complex has been on the tentative list for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage program since 2007.

Svaneti (Suania in ancient sources) is a historic province in Georgia, in the northwestern part of the country. It is inhabited by the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians. Situated on the southern slopes of the central Caucasus Mountains and surrounded by 3,000–5,000 meter peaks, Svaneti is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus. Four of the 10 highest peaks of the Caucasus are located in the region.
Svanetia is known for their architectural treasures and picturesque landscapes. The famous Svanetian towers erected mainly in the 9th-12th centuries, make the region’s villages more attractive. Architectural monuments of Upper Svanetia are included in a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Svan culture survives most wonderfully in its songs and dances. Svanetia boasts arguably the most archaic three-part polyphonic singing. Most of their songs are connected to round dances, are performed very loud and are full of dissonant chords.[3]

Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. This place was home to grapevine cultivation and Neolithic wine production for at least 8000 years. Due to the many millennia of wine in Georgian history and its prominent economic role, the traditions of wine are considered entwined with and inseparable from the national identity.
According to studies people of the South Caucasus accidentally discovered that wild grape juice turned into wine when it was left buried through the winter in a shallow pit. This knowledge was nourished by experience, and from 7000-6000 BC inhabitants of the current Georgia were cultivating grapes and burying kvevris(clay vessels), in which to store their wine ready for serving at ground temperature. After filling kvevri with the future wine it is topped with a lid, covered and sealed in the ground. The place where kvevris are buried is called Marani
The importance of wine in Georgian culture has reflected on many antique works of art. Many of the unearthed silver, gold and bronze artifacts of the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC bear chased imprints of the vine, grape clusters and leaves. The State Museum of Georgia has on display a cup of high-carat gold set with gems, an ornamented silver pitcher and some other artifacts dated to the 2nd millennium BC.
Sacredness of wine for Georgians is also firmly related to Christianisation of the country. In 4th century AD Saint Nino, who preached Christianity in Kartli, bore a cross made from vine wood. Since Georgian people are deeply religious people, that made wine even more important for them.
