Charismatic goalkeeper of the Black Stars and Kumasi Asante, Robert Mensah, around 2:30a.m. passed away at the Tema General Hospital after sustaining injuries in a brawl at Credo Drinking Spot.
Ever heard of the song,
"Robert Mensah goalkeeper number one
Aka nansa na )k) aburokyire
Okwasia bi t) he na 3y3 ne ya
W'ak) pentua de aw) ne nfe"
The song was composed to keep his memory alive.
Kotoko was in an ongoing African competition. The team was in camp at Kumasi, preparing for a semi final clash with Accra Great Olympics for the African Club Championship to be played on November 7. He was the first choice goalkeeper, having played his last match on October 3 against Egyptian giants Ismaily, with Kotoko triumphing 3-0. He was therefore supposed to be in camp with his colleagues.Robert was dead by November 2.
He had gone to a drinking spot to have some bottles where he tried resolving a scuffle between two feuding parties. He was stabbed in the process by Melfah, a local electrician.
His gimmicks and drama in the goal posts are equally not forgotten. There were occasions where out of boredom he will feign reading a newspaper because the opponents were not making enough incursions into his area. He was also known for his โmagicโ cap and black jersey.
His funeral also came with its own drama. For it was reported that from when his body was moved from Tema to Kumasi, crowds gathered, school children in Kumasi refused to go to school, just so they can observe all that goes on. The Kumasi sports stadium, venue of the funeral, saw huge numbers of Kotoko loyalists, many of them wailing as the body got in. Traffic stood still, commercial and private cars were wrapped in the traditional red mourning colors. A โtrotroโ driver who could not contain his grief died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after drinking his head off. Such was the love Ghanaians, especially Kotoko followers had for him.
May his soul rest in peace.
