Culture they say is a way of life ,football has become a part of the youth today as a source of entertainment, bringing people together and fostering peace and unison among eachother.
In view of this, Our roots foundation over the weekend engaged the youth of Fanteakwa south constituency in Eastern region in a football tournament with its main aim of promoting culture and unity through football.

The Our Roots foundation inter-community unity tournament which was held at Saamang park had Eight (8) communities which included; Saamang, Juaso , Osino, Nsuapemso, Nsutem, Gyampomani, Dwenase and Hemang .The tournament attracted over 450 spectators from various towns in the Fanteakwa constituency and saw the crowning of the team from Gyampomani community as the winner of the tournament.
It was with great pleasure the Chief Executive Officer of Our Roots foundation; Mr. Gyimah Ohene Marfo who doubled as the chairman of the event presented the winners with a cash token ,jerseys and other souvenirs and also advised and cautioned the youth on the dangers of electoral violence and itโ€™s consequences on the youth even as 2020 elections approaches .

Our Roots foundation extends its profound gratitude to the people and elders of the all the communities that graced the event with their presence, the Ghana Police for their support in ensuring peace and protection throughout the activity and all stakeholders and supporters who helped in making this event a success.

Did you know that Ghana played against the Los Blancos before? When the communication was done between the Football Association (F. A.) and Real Madrid, the battle of which team to represent Ghana on the day began. The decision was to choose between the Republican Team and the Black Stars.

At the time the Republican Football Club, which belonged to Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah were considered favourites. After the ballot, the Black Stars had won and thus represented the country in the match.

The starting eleven of the Black Stars were;
1- Dodoo Ankrah
2- Frank Crentsil
3- E.O Oblitey
4- Ben Acheampong
5- Addo Odametey
6- Kofi Pare
7- Osei Kofi
8- Wilberforce Mfum
9- Mohammed Salisu
10- Edward Acquah
11- Edward Aggrey Fynn

The match ended in a 3-3 draw with Ghana's goals coming from a brace by Edward Acquah and one from Edward Aggrey Fynn.

Puskas' pair of strikes (one of which was scored on the stroke of full-time straight from the restart prompted by Ghana's late third goal) and Madrid legend Francisco 'Paco' Gento's finish completed the six-goal thriller.

Why A Match Between Ghana And Real Madrid?

During the time of economic hardship in the country under Dr. Nkrumah, Ghanaians were unhappy and the President wanted to find a way to put smiles on the faces of his people. He asked the then Director of Sports, Ohene Djan how he could make Ghanaians happy. Ohene Djan's response was, "Bring Real Madrid to Ghana."

The date of this match was Sunday, August 19, 1962.

Charismatic goalkeeper of the Black Stars and Kumasi Asante, Robert Mensah, around 2:30a.m. passed away at the Tema General Hospital after sustaining injuries in a brawl at Credo Drinking Spot.

Ever heard of the song,

"Robert Mensah goalkeeper number one

Aka nansa na )k) aburokyire

Okwasia bi t) he na 3y3 ne ya

W'ak) pentua de aw) ne nfe"

The song was composed to keep his memory alive.

Kotoko was in an ongoing African competition. The team was in camp at Kumasi, preparing for a semi final clash with Accra Great Olympics for the African Club Championship to be played on November 7. He was the first choice goalkeeper, having played his last match on October 3 against Egyptian giants Ismaily, with Kotoko triumphing 3-0. He was therefore supposed to be in camp with his colleagues.Robert was dead by November 2.

He had gone to a drinking spot to have some bottles where he tried resolving a scuffle between two feuding parties. He was stabbed in the process by Melfah, a local electrician.

His gimmicks and drama in the goal posts are equally not forgotten. There were occasions where out of boredom he will feign reading a newspaper because the opponents were not making enough incursions into his area. He was also known for his โ€˜magicโ€™ cap and black jersey.

His funeral also came with its own drama. For it was reported that from when his body was moved from Tema to Kumasi, crowds gathered, school children in Kumasi refused to go to school, just so they can observe all that goes on. The Kumasi sports stadium, venue of the funeral, saw huge numbers of Kotoko loyalists, many of them wailing as the body got in. Traffic stood still, commercial and private cars were wrapped in the traditional red mourning colors. A โ€˜trotroโ€™ driver who could not contain his grief died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after drinking his head off. Such was the love Ghanaians, especially Kotoko followers had for him.

May his soul rest in peace.

Felicia Abban was Ghana's first female photographer. Felicia was born in 1935 and after her marriage to Robert Abban in 1953 she relocated from Takoradi to Accra.

Her career as a photographer spanned for over fifty (50) years and it began as an apprentice of her father, a professional photographer in the Gold Coast.

In 1955, Felicia Abban established her studio in Accra and took on other women apprentices. She, through her marvelous work projected the African narrative through the lens and became a personal photographer of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah throughout the 1960s until Nkrumah's ouster.

She retired from photography industry as a result of a worsening arthritis condition and died in 2013.

Her husband, Mr. Robert Abban was the Director of the Ghana Textiles and Manufacturing Company and was also the man who designed the fabric to commemorate Ghana's independence celebration in 1957 with Prez. Nkrumah's portrait featured on flowers with the Ghana map.

The leopard was so dangerous it killed two persons and injured five others, before being captured ALIVE at Dominase (a ward in Kumase) on that memorable Saturday.

As fate would have it, just after the warriors announced to the Asantehene about the capturing of the leopard, the "mmagyegyefuo" (royal nannies) also came to announce the delivery of a royal baby by Nana Abakoma at Edweso.

PART 1

In August 1892, the gong beaters announced to the residents of the traditional 77 wards of Kumase that a dangerous leopard had besieged Kumase.

Nana Kwaku Dua III was the Asantehene. The King summoned his warriors and skilled hunters and gives clear instructions:.....Catch the leopard ALIVE". A leopard is known in twi as 'ษ”sebษ”' or 'etwie'.

Now, while the search party in Kumase are combing everywhere for the leopard, a young royal named Nana Abakoma residing at Edweso Besease, about 19km away, is close to pregnancy delivery.
