Many travelling within Africa still face high fees and long delays before getting a visa

Kenya is to end visa requirements to all African visitors by the end of the year, President William Ruto has said.

"It is time we... realise that having visa restrictions amongst ourselves is working against us," he told an international conference.

Visa-free travel within the continent has been a goal of the African Union (AU) for the past decade.

While there are regional deals and bilateral arrangements, progress towards no restrictions has been slow.

Only Seychelles, The Gambia and Benin offer entry to all African citizens without a visa, according to a 2022 AU-backed report.

But according to Africa's Visa Openness Index - which measures the extent to which each country in Africa is open to visitors from other African countries - most countries are making progress towards simplifying entry processes and dropping restrictions to some other nations.

In 2022, Kenya was ranked 31st on the index out of 54 states.

President Ruto told an audience in Congo-Brazzaville that it was bad for business.

"When people cannot travel, businesspeople cannot travel, entrepreneurs cannot travel, we all become net losers.

"Let me say this: As Kenya, by the end of this year, no African will be required to have a visa to come to Kenya," he said to loud cheers from the conference delegates.

"Our children form this continent should not be locked in borders in Europe and also be locked in borders in Africa."

He was speaking at a summit aimed at protecting some of the world's largest rainforests.

The AU launched its African passport in 2016. The idea behind the passport is for all African citizens to able to travel without any visa.

RWANDA ANNOUNCES FREE VISA TRAVELS FOR ALL AFRICANS

Rwanda joins visa-free travel trend, meaning Africans can visit the country without a visa.
Kigali, with a population of 1.2 million, is the capital and largest city of Rwanda.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has announced a significant policy change, ushering in visa-free travel for all Africans. This move makes Rwanda the fourth African nation to adopt this approach, as President Kagame revealed during the 23rd Global Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Kagame emphasized the potential of Africa as "a unified tourism destination" and highlighted that Africa still relies on 60 percent of its tourists from outside the continent, according to data from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

He stated, "Any African can get on a plane to Rwanda whenever they wish and they will not pay a thing to enter our country." Once implemented, Rwanda will join Gambia, Benin, and Seychelles as one of the few African countries removing travel restrictions for Africans.

Additionally, Kenyan President William Ruto unveiled plans to allow all Africans to travel to Kenya visa-free by December 31, underlining the importance of eliminating visa restrictions among African nations.

In 2016, the African Union introduced the African Passport and free movement of people, aiming to facilitate Africans' ability to travel, work, and live within their own continent. However, thus far, the travel document has been issued primarily to diplomats and AU officials.

Furthermore, the African Union launched the African Continental Free Trade Area, a continent-wide free trade zone with an estimated worth of $3.4 trillion, designed to create a unified market for the continent's 1.3 billion people and boost economic development.
