Back to Ghana

Back to Ghana Back to Ghana brings back home talents from abroad and connects them with Employers and Business opportunities! www.backtoghana.com

There is a lot of companies in Ghana who hire expat because they want somebody who has learned in foreign university and have experience of working in Europe, States, wherever. But there is a lot of Ghanians out there with same values. So why to hire an expat to who you need to get work permit (which is very expensive) and who most probably will leave after few years working here when you can hire

a Ghanian with same knowledge ad who does not need work permit to be hired in his home country and who would be much more permanent and more loyal employee. Or if you have gained your business management degree abroad – very good! But come and start your business back home – it’s easier here!

To the Back to Ghana managers the following announcement was delivered:

hello all,

I'm currently putting together the top Operations team for AIH/Jumia (includes Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Senegal, Cameroon, Ghana, and also few Asian countries - Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and will expand to another 5-6 countries over the next 6-9 months). Am looking for very strong candidates. If you know any good people who would be interested in building the future of e-Commerce in Africa, then please let me know.

Since we are a start-up, the financial offer at this stage might not be the very highest (but it is decent, and competitve, though). But in terms of the professional opportunity, it is immense. I am personally very happy on this front - I have the chance now to really put my Ops knowledge at test and design something from scratch, end-to-end...

Do feel free to forward this message, and to connect people to me who you think might be interested, and have the right background.

In terms of structure, Jumia has the central team, where you have CEO, CFO, CTO and COO (that's me), and then countries, where you have MDs. The positions I'm looking to hire would report directly to me, and each of those would ultimately build their own small team of experts (1-2 people), they would also be the immediate functional heads of respective areas across all countries (e.g., head of dispatch & delivery in every country, etc.).

The positions I'm looking to hire are:

- Global Head of Dispatch and Delivery - somebody who can build the best-in-class delivery system. Ideally from a company like DHL, UPS, Fedex, etc., - with experience in emerging markets - and ideally not someone who has run processes as the manager, but rather somebody in their BPM, lean, operations planning, process improvement, development, or other similar functions - who have worked on changing the system, not running it.

- Global Head of Warehousing and Processing - somebody who has worked in supply chain, distribution, etc. - similarly to previous, shoudl be someone who actually knows how to build and improve processes.

- Global Head of Customer Service - somebody who can make happen a top-notch call centre

All these positions would have a responsibility for both processes and technology - and would become the ultimate "product managers" to liaise with IT developement, to give the demands for tools required, as well as be responsible for the processes.

Then, in addition, am looking for some functional roles:

- Senior Experts in Lean / Operational Excellence - would be Lean Six Sigma Black Belt trained and certified (or with other similar experience) process engineers. Ideally from manufacturing background. And also a Global Head of Operational Excellence, who will implement Lean practices across the organizationa and deploy his (or her) SWAT team of Senior Experts to resolve specific issues as they come up (project team/firefighting team)

- Head of Business Intellicence / Chief Analyst - would be working very closely with me to enable the COO dashboard, and operational monitoring, as well as participate in strategic discussions, and figure out ways how to approach key strategic decisions (operational type, e.g., which network model for collection points is most appropriate etc.)

And finally, am looking for a super-smart, super-keen, super-excited young graduate with 1-2 years work experience to become my Chief of Staff and manage key priorities for the COO office.

If you know anyone who knows anyone, please let them contact me at [email protected]

Thanks!

Indrek
