Tengzuk is a community surrounded by dramatic granite rock formations and natural caves with rock shelters. The first school in the community was located in one of these rock shelters. Two types of indigenous architectural style are associated with the Tongo-Tengzuk community. These are the flat roofed mud houses solely permitted in the settlement areas close to the earth goddess known as Nyoo and thatch mud houses permitted in other settlement areas. The architecture blends beautifully with the natural environment. The rationale behind the mud roofing was to avoid the risk of gushing fire from the thatch roofs extending to the shrine to cause the displeasure of the earth goddess.
The resultant punishments from the goddess in the face of unplanned burning in the shrine are drought, poor crop harvest and outbreak of diseases in the entire Talensi land. However, modernization has distorted the local architectural style of the people in the community. Galvanized sheets are now used for roofing by almost ninety percent of the settlements closed to the earth goddess. In spite of this current situation, all the houses within the chief’s settlement area and its surrounding settlements continue to maintain the tradition of flat roof architectural style.
