BORBORBOR ENSEMBLE
Music and dance constitute an important aspect of the
Ghanaian. This is manifested in many aspects of their
life, i,e. work, social encounters and mourning
Borborbor is probably the most popular ensembles
(dance) in the Volta Region and is undoubtedly
widespread across the country.
The name Borborbor stems from the bending posture
of the dancers
Borborbor started in the 1950s, just before Ghana's
Independence.
It was started at Kpando by a native Police officer,
then called Kwadzo Nuatror, who originally named the
group Kpando Borborbor Band
β’ The Band was however later adopted by Kwame
Nkrumah (in the thick of the struggle for Independence)
and was renamed Kwame Nkrumah Borborbor Band. It
is said that the first time Nkrumah witnessed the group
perform at Kpando Residency, he could not help but
jump into the ring and start dancing
β’ This mixed band comprising mainly the youth supported
CPP in its political campaigns in the 1950s, which led to
the opposition parties boycotting Borborbor but rather
embracing Tuidzi and Akpesse ensembles coup and
β’ Borborbor was proscribed following the 1966 coup and
Kwadzo Nuatror was even imprisoned in Ussher Fort
whilst the musical instruments of the band were seized
and sent to the Castle, then the seat of Government.
The ban was however lifted just before the 2nd Republic
and Kwadzo Nuatror was released and engaged by the
same military government
β’ Borborbor has remained a social dance performed at
any function at all, including worship by some Orthodox
churches particularly Catholic and Evangelical
Presbyterian (E.P.) Church
β’ Borborbor is traditionally performed with 5 basic drums
(some of the best quality drums can be bought around
Peki that boast several good carvers)
β’ Borborbor has no basic movement, but the dancers
usually use two white handkerchiefs which they keep
rolling, whilst bending and shaking their waist. The
handkerchiefs were to prevent the hands from doing
anything prof
