EDINA BAKATUE IS ON AND BIG !

By courtesy of Joliinaiko Eco Tours, we hosted 7 participants in Elmina. We discussed the concept of a ‘deity’ to generate interest. So , at the Benya Shrine, our participants followed most of the rites and rituals with interest and reverence. On a lighter note, the dance of our cultural ladies on the branded canoes attracted attention. I noticed that , the gun shots that followed the 3rd and final casting of our chief’s net sook many of us.
This year’s catch was very promising and the applause was huge. We are wait for a month to fish at sea. More to come.

Benya Buw
Translates “ Benya Shrine” the physical and symbolic abode of the Lagoon Deity in Elmina, also representing the male energy. The female energy , the wife of Nana Benya is at Abakrampa. The goddess is beautiful!
“ Benya” is wassa dialect. The Fanti equivalent is “ Menya” which translates “ I have gotten or found it ! “ Wassa and Fanti are all dialects of the Akan language.
The Bakatue festival has the Benya Deity as the pillar ; the festival urshers in the fishing season. Fishing employs about two-thirds of the Elmina population estimated at a little over 34, 000.
A new flag is currently hoisted and ‘ flying’ on top of the shrine and is WHITE. Why ‘white’?
One of the reasons why the colour is white is that, the white flag represents CHASTITY. In traditional circles, there is a saying; “ Bosom kyer fii!” ( Deities abhor/ dislikes dirt). What is ‘ dirt’ ?
Any time, for example, that one goes near/ touch/ see a co**se, or have s*x, one becomes spiritually dirty. Such a person cannot enter the shrine and be close to the deity. To be able to reverse the aura , one must wash in the sea, water with salt, or soak certain herbs which instantly turn the water into “ holy water” .
Physically, those of us , living close to the the Lagoon should show respect to our Benya Deity. Please stop throwing rubbish into our Lagoon!

SHRINE TRAIL...................what is a shrine ?
A shrine is the physical abode of a deity and it is symbolic. Symbolic because it is a representation. All religions use symbolism. I will not go into that now.
A deity is what in our vernacular call "Bosom". The meaning of bosom is 'intermediary'. How?
It is a fact that what we commonly refer to as God, is man's own creation. For this reason, God did not give any man a religion. God has NO religion! It is therefore right to create your own religion. Your religion is guided by your traditions so that you can understand and appreciate it. With an understanding , your appreciation and confidence augment. This is how you derive your spiritual power.
At the palace, one speaks to the chief through a linguist and vice versa. In the same vein, it is not possible to talk to the Supreme Being directly but through an intermediary /Linguist. Our Ancestors saw the environment as that which gave us life and maintained. What do you see in the environment? Lagoons, sea, rocks/stones, trees/forests, to name a few. We rely on them for survival and need to be respected. A pagan is not an idol worshipper but one who has reverence for the environment. So as a medium to connect (I said 'connect') with the Supreme Being /Universe, our Ancestors represent this intermediary with physical features of the environment.

EDINA BAKATUE

Bakatue is celebrated on the first Tuesday of July. The Omanhen (paramount chief), divisional chiefs and the entire state go through the priest to offer sacred food, to the river god and pray for peace and prosperity for Elmina and its satellite allegiance communities.
Six weeks before the festival (Tuesday), rituals are performed. The preparation begins with the paramount chief, who orders the gong-gong be**er to beat the gong-gong to inform the townspeople of the imposition of a ban on net-fishing in the Benya lagoon, forbidding the selling of fresh fish in the main market, forbidding the newly harvested crops from being eaten or sold in public, causing the dead to be buried without delay, placing a ban on drumming, to bring quietness in the town. During the six weeks of preparation leading to the festival, widows are made to end all widowhood rites in order to purify themselves for the coming year. Burukutu Kyew( a cap on top of the sacred shrine) is replaced with a new one. The old one is carried to Kunkuntar, an abode of one of the gods, to be “swallowed” by the sea.

On Monday evening of the second week, youngsters organise at the river embankment a “gyantsiatu” (bonfire), which takes them into Tuesday. In the morning, the men carry pieces of wood with fire to chase their female counterpart, singing and casting of insinuations to get rid of all evils of the past year and as penance to the women for wrongdoings.

In the afternoon on Monday of the third week, Ankobea(Asafo No. 1) goes to perform an important ceremony called “korba Butuw” – overturning of the wooden platter. As part of the ceremony, a sheep is presented to the state to be sacrificed, symbolizing official adherence to the taboos mentioned above.

On this same Monday very late in the evening, the god of the lagoon is invoked and carried to the shrine to guard and guide the state as it prepares to enter the new year. The morning of the following Tuesday, the sheep is slaughtered and offered as a sacrifice to the gods amidst the pouring of libation and incantations. The women organize a retaliation and by using”mpapan”- whip, they whip menfolk they meet. This signfies the condemnation of immortality of men, which is an offence against the state.

At the dusk of Monday of the fourth week, the first of three traditional state drumming and dancing ceremonies, popularly known “dombo”, occurs in front of the sacred shrine. The traditional priest and the priestess drum and dance in front of all the chiefs and concerned citizens present. At certain stages, the gods of the land possess the priest to direct and control his actions and utterances. These activities are repeated in the fifth week. ( to be continued). Elmina is a town in Ghana that can boast of two wonderful festivals. It includes Edina Bakatue and Edina Bronya(Christmas).

Importance
• Celebrating Elmina’s opening of the lagoon- To commemorate the covenant given to Nana kwa Amankwa by the god Nana Kyenboa upon his discovery of Elmina.
