Wow, a home for monkeys!!! A visit to the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana was a mixed feeling. I grew up with only one popular monkey in my neighbourhood. It was a friend to all the children. I remember those memorable Saturdays. I don’t know how come i became “Monkey-Phobia”.
When i had a 13 -day tour with an American Tourist, i was excited about the package but my fear was meeting the monkeys. The trip from Kumasi was smooth until we got to Jema where we had to turn on the rough road to this “beautiful heaven”.
My first expression was “Wow, who brought them here”. It was such beautiful experience. Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary is a hub for Monkeys. According to Wikipedia, the twin- town has about 700(Seven Hundred) Monkeys. The two types of monkeys found in the Sanctuary are Geoffrey’s Pied Colombus and Campbell Mona. The Campbell Mona Monkeys are the friendliest. These monkeys are protected by traditional laws. They are regarded as natives of the community. The monkeys feed from the kitchens of the women in the communities. When the monkeys die, they are buried as human beings and funerals are performed. In Boabeng Fiema, the monkeys are not regarded as animals but natives.
When we were feeding the monkeys, one funny thing was a smart monkey; it takes the pieces of bread with its right hand and hide it in the left palm. What a smart monkey!!! I couldn’t hide my joy although i was afraid of the monkeys.
