Have you heard about Sikorsuit sea ice? They are an annual springtime phenomenon in South Greenland, but this year they are extra extensive and extra persistent.

So here we are on 29 June 2024 and they’re still here packing in almost all the primary seaways in South Greenland.

What this means for travel in and around the region is: changes of plans, in a nutshell.

• The locally owned and operated boat companies may need to cancel and reschedule due to inability to reach certain destinations, or delay departure times due to using extended time getting through the ice.

• They may also change travel routes, for example instead of sailing in Tunulliarfik Fjord to/from coastal destinations, one may be rerouted in a way that utilities Igaliku Fjord instead - a boat transfer, a UTV drive over land between Igaliku/Itillleq and one more boat transfer.

• In times with extensive Sikorsuit sea ice, we recommend considering helicopter transfers if possible. Do be aware, however, that helicopters can be more sensitive for wind, weather and visibility conditions.

On behalf of all tourism stakeholders in South Greenland, we thank you in advance for your patience, understanding and compassion.

See you in South Greenland!

🇬🇱 Happy Greenland National Day 🇬🇱 to all inuit in Kalaallit Nunaat and abroad, and to all people who live in Greenland with all of their Heart and Soul ❤️🇬🇱 And it’s no coincidence that this most sacred of days falls on the Summer Solstice, a pivotal day in the natural world ☀️☀️☀️

To be Inuit is genetic, yes, but more importantly it’s about a mentality and a way of life. First and foremost, living completely entwined with and respecting nature - catching and gathering one’s own food and eating locally after the seasons, harvesting the farmlands one’s ancestors tilled for the first time ever, knowing the skies and currents so intimately you know the weather before it even arrives, using all parts of a catch so to not let anything go to waste, mutually depending on working animals to provide for one’s family.

It’s about community and family ties, being inclusive and sharing, helping others, welcoming everyone, singing and playing music together. No relative is too many generations away, everyone is treated as nearest family.

It’s about being creative and expressive, through art and music, through traditional markings and clothing, and though storytelling and poetry.

We feel it’s safe to say that this country is one of the most incredible places you will ever experience. We hope you as travellers come with an open mind and heart, and a huge respect for cultural diversity. We hope you leave changed by new experiences and local stories. We wish you the greatest holiday in which you learn so much about our beautiful people and country 🇬🇱

Please do take Hiking Safety seriously in Greenland 🙏🏽 In our region, polar bears near inhabited areas (towns, settlements and sheep farms) have been an increasing sight the past couple of years.

The best advice is to hike with a trained local guide who will have all the necessary protection and skills to handle a bear encounter.

If you are walking alone, may we strongly suggest you talk with locals before you set off into the backcountry - to hear about any recent bear encounters and also to hook up to the best local working channel for a VHF radio. It’s also a very good idea to have a satellite telephone as well, for more remote areas.

Communication is key!

There’s almost never enough time to see and do everything you want, but the key is to be present for every single moment you DO have in South Greenland, and appreciate this diverse region for the gorgeous gift it is 🙏🏽

If you can spend 10-14 days in South Greenland, then you’re well on your way to being able to experience and meet all the incredible people and places.

Our three core “packages” take you all the way through the region from the farmlands in the north (Tunulliarfik Fjord & Farm Holiday Greenland) to the centrally-located regional capital with many day-excursion choices (Qaqortoq City Break), and then all the way to the very tip of the country and even over to the polar bear territory of the southeast coast (Southern Fjords Adventure).

We can’t wait to see you in South Greenland!

Honouring World Oceans Day 2024 🌊 In Greenland, the ocean and all the fjord systems created by its flowing into the cracks and crevices of land features are among our greatest gifts.

The ocean gives us a way of life - a maritime culture lived along the coastline for both free time enjoyment and also subsistence fishing. The ocean gives us transport - with no roads between towns, boat travel is one of two methods we must rely on. And, the ocean gives us nourishment - delicious and organic seafood, fish, seabirds and sea mammals that have sustained Inuit for 4500 years. Thank you, Ocean! 🌊

History in the Making • Uunartoq, South Greenland

Uunartoq Island is best known for its hot springs, but there’s also a lot of significant Inuit cultural history here.

There are dozens of Inuit ruins and graves on the island, and even a location where rare mummies have been found! They were unfortunately removed in the early 1900’s and taken to other countries. This is akin to sacrilege but it’s finally getting reconciled with actions toward a homecoming.

At the end of May, the Uunartoq mummies made the first step toward home, being escorted by the Greenland National Museum & Archives from USA to Denmark. Preservation facilities need to be created so the mummies can take the next step to Greenland.

What an incredibly exciting piece of history in the making for Uunartoq & South Greenland!

30/05/2024

Do you know the “cardinal rule” of travelling in South Greenland in Sheep farming areas? 🐏🙏🏽 Please do not ever walk on or set up a tent on the grass fields - these are sacred no-go spaces because they are essentially the farmers’ livelihood and winter fodder for their sheep.

Greenland is special in that nobody owns land, so you may have often heard that the nature is available for everyone. This is true, but in South Greenland it comes with a few "footnotes" because the farmers have special rights to use much of the backcountry to graze their sheep and to cultivate the land for grass fields. It’s important to respect their areas and their animals. It is also important to respect this part of inuit culture which is not only unique in Greenland but in the entire global inuit community - and thus what contributes to our region's cultural UNESCO World Heritage honour.

Please & thank you, on behalf of all farmers 🙏🏽

Sustainable art • This Sermeq Pottery ceramics glaze is made with the ash from the owner’s sauna. Why throw it away, if you can use it for something. Reduce, reuse, recycle ♻️ But make it beautiful! Coming soon to Qaqortoq, South Greenland 🤩

PS - the clay is from the Greenland Ice Sheet. “Sermeq” means glacier, so even the name has a special significance!

South Greenland is an incredibly artistic region in general. Here you will find so many unique gifts made by local people with local materials! There are also art sculpture walks, street art routes and beautiful cobble pathways, fountains and features made with local stone.

Let’s get flying in South Greenland! It’s always such an eye-opener to get up in the air and see how truly vast our backcountry is. It really puts things in perspective when you land and stand at sea level amidst such giant mountains and fjordscapes.

Come on a little sky-high joy-ride with us from Qaqortoq to Tasermiut Fjord and back - with a surprise landing at the newest backcountry accommodation in the region! The video is definitely inspiration to a treat-yo-self excursion on your next trip to South Greenland! (Just to clarify, this fjord and these cabins are also accessible by boat, if desired).

Thanks to Sermeq Helicopters and nanortalik_boat_charter for the excursion collaboration; and thanks to Arina Kleist, Snow Falcon Media for filming. Snow Falcon Media has done it again!
