The Bicentenary Commemoration of Janjanbureh in the Central River Region is in progress. The event which commenced on Thursday 4th January 2024 attracted large audience from across our National boundaries and not exempting the Gambians far and near. The Symposium is in progress with highly educated personalities as Panelists unveiling the untold stories of Janjanbureh and the country at large, most specifically on slavery, though a painful history but an important account of our past.

The training is a component of the HerMap Project, an EU funded Project in collaboration with Heritage Management Organization based in Greece and the National Centre for Arts and Culture, The Gambia.

It is of great sock that due to a natural disaster, the first heavy rains that fell completely cut off this Jetty linking the river and the Island for safe and easy landing on the Island. Not withstanding, our sincere apologies to our esteem visitors and all concerned persons for this unfortunate occurrence. We hope to restore the system perfectly in the soonest possible time. The wellbeing of our Heritage be they tangible or intangible is our primary concern.

Launching of the kunta Kinteh Foundation held on the 13th day of May 2022 at Kunta Kinteh family compound in Juffureh. The launching was attended by foundation members from the Kombos and inhabitants. The establishment of the Foundation is geared towards further strengthening the roots of Kunta Kinteh. In her speech the eight generation of Kunta Kinteh, acknowledges the family's unflinching support for the Foundation in realizing it's dreams. Various speakers also expressed similar sentiments. Furthermore, the launching will be followed by the celebration of the 2nd edition of the International Kunta Kinteh day by July 5th. There will be series of activities before the 5th. On the 2nd of July there will a cultural festival in Juffureh, 2nd day of July will unveil an investment forum and on the 5th of July there will be a carnival by 9:00Am prompt. The event will also witness the promotion of the eight generation to the wider world.

Kunta Kinte, β€œthe African,” is a character in the 1976 novel Roots. He was born in 1750, enslaved and taken to America. He was a member of the highly respected Kinte clan of the Mandinka people of the Gambia. A warrior who was educated, clever, skilled, strong, resilient and proud, he was a young man of immense courage that empower him when he was captured by slavers. Kunta never accepted the name and religion given to him by his slave master and he never gave up on his dream of returning to his homeland and he challenged other enslaved people to fight for their freedom.

In her conservation efforts, the National Centre for Arts and Culture has spread her tentacles in supporting a Community Base Organisation (Violence Against Girls Organisation and Skill Motivators) to commence six months skills training on tie and dye and batik with the use of local dye stuff targeting 10 young girls to better equip them with variety of skills to enhance self reliance.
In this regards, Violence Against Girls and Skill Motivators are staging a fund raising musical Jamboree with the famous talented Artiste ST (DINDING MANSA) on the 4th July 2021 at Albreda Upper and Senior Secondary School Hall.

The proceeds of the fund raising will be ploughed back into the training program to train more young girls within Juffureh/Albreda and surrounding villages.

Entrance ticket is D250.00 before the day and D300.00 at the gate. Get your ticket(s) before the day at affordable price.
