When I think about my next trip to βThe Gambiaβ the pictures that come into my mind are of Golden beaches, exotic fauna & flora, days filled with adventure, and nights spent relaxing with good food to the sound of local drums.
Days are spent either relaxing on one of my many long and sandy beaches, Kotu beach is one of my favourites with its soft sand and a good selection of beach bars to have some lunch. Some days I like to go further afield and will take a car and picnic to Gunjur, where the beaches are completely deserted, this is a great place to completely relax in a totally natural environment.
The Gambia is not just about relaxing; I love to get out and about to see the real Gambia away from the main tourist areas. Visiting the local markets is a must for me, as you enter all your senses go into overdrive taking in the colours of the local produce and fabrics, the smells of the spices and the noise of the bartering for souvenirs to take back such as drums and wooden carvings.
Senegal is also a must, visit the game reserve and get up close to many different species of wildlife, and take some amazing photos of the Giraffes and Rhinos! Venturing out with a truck safari is also an eye opening experience, going into the bush areas of the Gambia seeing the traditional way of living in mud hut villages & spotting monkeys and amazingly colourful birds along the way. My favourite day is to cruise up the river Gambia to visit the villages of Albreda and Juffreh which were written about in the book Roots, combined with the cruise this is a magical day to relax on the boat see some beautiful scenery and learn about the history of this tiny country.
During the evenings I either sit by the hotel pool watching the colourful cultural shows with African dancers and stilt walkers, go to the local restaurants to sample grill fish , chicken Yassa & Benachin, or for a wider choice the Senegambia strip, which is where you can find a great selection of multicultural cuisine and the best night life.
The Gambia is an amazing country that has something to offer everyone it truly is the smiling coast of West Africa and only 6 hours away Uk!
