Brace up for more hardship this year! 😒

Yesterday, a Norway-based Gambian woman contacted us and disclosed: "I sent a car to The Gambia. I was told by an agent that it would cost around D40,000 to clear the car. But when I went to the port this week, they said the new clearing fee is D56,000. I couldn't believe it. I left without my car."

Another Diaspora Gambian from the USA also contacted us yesterday claiming he was ordered to pay over D6000 at the airport for a second-hand PlayStation he had in his bag. He left the PlayStation with them.

When we contacted our insiders at the GRA, they said customs duties and taxes will continue to increase this year because the government tasked them to collect D13.5billion in 2022 - the highest revenue target in the recent history of the country.

And this D13.5billion excludes the hundreds of millions that customs officers are going to steal in 2022.

Meaning prices in our markets will continue to go up. Customs duties at the airport, seaport and our borders will continue to go up. Income taxes will continue to go up.

Small businesses will die. More Gambians will go to bed hungry each night. Potential investors will be scared away. Many will be out of work.

It's going to be a tough year!

Our story

WATOURS

GAMBIA

When I think about my next trip to β€œThe Gambia” the pictures that come into my mind are of Golden beaches, exotic fauna & flora, days filled with adventure, and nights spent relaxing with good food to the sound of local drums.

Days are spent either relaxing on one of my many long and sandy beaches, Kotu beach is one of my favourites with its soft sand and a good selection of beach bars to have some lunch. Some days I like to go further afield and will take a car and picnic to Gunjur, where the beaches are completely deserted, this is a great place to completely relax in a totally natural environment.
