Summer and this time, we wanted to do something different. We searched and found something that for Greece, is unique. An "Island" on the Mainland.

This is a multiplex camping, that meets the needs of every guest . The one who just wants to relax and to come in contact with the nature. The one who loves sports, activities, partied with dance evenings, shows, karaoke, song and films, but at the same time doesnt want to be located somewhere secular. The singles, couples, families. Just say it and we'll tell you that you will find it there.

The name is NISI and is located in a picturesque village near Stylida, named Raches.

Just 600 meters from the Raches, there is this wonderful camping that can accommodate, beside camping enthusiasts who are equipped with tents or caravans, also those who love the idea of unique relaxation and contact nature, but do not own any of the things that they need.

You are able to rent beautiful tents, ethnic style, twin, Quad and Deluxe. Each has its own garden with lovely wooden sofas and chairs, where you can enjoy your day, listening to music, drinking coffee, or reading under the shade of beautiful trees, having the singing of the birds and the murmur of the waves. The tents provide stream beds, fan, bed linen and towels.

There is also a wonderful tree house that can accommodate a couple. Of course there is the shared fully equipped kitchen for those who want to prepare their meals. On the other hand, relax with dinner preparations is not exactly the idea, of real relaxation, therefore there is the restaurant for food and the bar for drinks and snack.

At this point I would like to emphasise that the dishes are extremely tasty and the prices at a level that we would suggest you to really relax and let the amazing staff, to spoil you.

Another point that it is necessary to emphasize, is the absolute, continuous, cleaning. I had to ask one of the owners, if the girls are waiting outside the toilets and the showers, so every time, someone comes out, they rush to clean. It's really incredible and it is impossible not to notice. Always shiny and fragrant. Even during the night.

Then the Nisi has three beach volley courts, with contests between teams, also a great big playground for every age, for kids, an wonderful animateur. Also for the evenings, as i already mentioned, there are shows from known artists, stand up comedy, karaoke and anything else that you might put in your mind. Even the open-air cinema evenings. Something special, that we at least, did not find, in another camping, is the small but sufficient, free lending library. From there you can get a book and lose yourself in the pages. And you who brought some with you, if you are finished before you leave, It is not bad idea to leave it there, so someone else can enjoy it.

From the new season, there will be, swimming pool for adults and swimming pool for children. The camping opened last year, and the owners have many ideas to enrich the space even more.

The Nisi, may not have its own beach, but if you don't have your own car, the staff is more than willing to take you on two nearby beaches. One is in the village, the Raches, six hundred meters from the camping, in front of cafes, taverns.

The other is the lighthouse, nine hundred meters away from the camping. The beach is ideal for kite, but if you don't want to try yourselves, you can relax in the amazing sun loungers, enjoying the music and the food from the two beach bar and enjoy the sight of this wonderful sport.

In the endless options that offer you the camping itself, Nisi collaborates with agencies that can offer you wonderful dayly excursions, in Lichadonisia, Skiathos, skopelos, alonissos etc. We must not forget the hiking, because the place has the blessing of combining sea and mountain. Last but not least, there is the cycling. You can hire bicycles from the camping and enjoy the beauty of a nearby or distant ride with your family.

I imagine that there is already in your mind, the desire to get yourself there the following summer. We talked about everything that this camping can offer, but we all know that our psychology plays a big role for everyone to have fun. Here I come to assure you that as soon as you enter the entrance, you will see only smiling faces, and people who want to serve your every need. Be sure to visit this amazing place.

We thank our collaborator Giota Tasouli for her wonderful photos.

Greek Christmas Traditions

Christmas tends to be a quiet, solemn, season. In some areas, the holiday is preceded by a time of fasting. For Greece, the season is in full swing by December 6th, the Feast of St. Nicholas when presents are exchanged, and will last through January 6th, the Feast of Epiphany. Nicholas (and every Greek Nikos) have their so called name day on 6th December.
On the day and evening before Christmas and New Year's, children sing the equivalent of carols(kalanda) from house to house. These kalandas bless the house. Often the songs are accompanied by small metal triangles and little clay drums. The children are frequently rewarded with sweets and dried fruits.
The word carol comes from a Greek dance called a choraulein, which was accompanied by flute music. The dance later spread throughout Europe and became especially popular with the French, who replaced the flute music with singing. People originally performed carols on several occasions during the year. By the 1600's, carols involved singing only, and Christmas had become the main holiday for these songs.
St. Basil's Day (New Year's Day) is a time for parties and gift giving. St. Basil is the Santa Claus of Greeks.

Saint Nicholas
St. Nicholas is important in Greece as the patron saint of sailors. According to Greek tradition, his clothes are drenched with brine, his beard drips with seawater, and his face is covered with perspiration because he has been working hard against the waves to reach sinking ships and rescue them from the angry sea. Greek ships never leave port without some sort of St. Nicholas icon on board.
After 40 days of fasting, the Christmas feast is looked forward to with great anticipation by adults and children alike. Pigs, lambs and goats are slaughtered, women usually bake ceremonial pastries during this time for the big family meal, served after church services on Christmas Day. Melomakarona are honey-dipped cookies often stuffed with nuts. Kourambiedes are cookies dusted with powdered sugar and very white, Diples are fried dough cookies, dipped in honey.
On almost every table are loaves of Christopsomo ("Christ Bread"). It is a round loaf, decorated on the top with a cross, around which people will also make symbols shaped in dough that represent whatever it is they do in life. If people live on an island and they're fisherman, they will decorate the bread with fish. If they have a lamb farm, you'll see little lambs.
Christmas trees are not commonly used in Greece (but this is changing rapidly). In almost every home the main symbol of the season is a shallow wooden bowl with a piece of wire that is suspended across the rim; from that hangs a sprig of basil wrapped around a wooden cross. A small amount of water is kept in the bowl to keep the basil alive and fresh. Once a day, a family member, usually the mother, dips the cross and basil into some holy water and uses it to sprinkle water in each room of the house. This ritual is believed to keep the Killantzaroi (Kallikantzaroi or Karkantzaroi) away from the house.

Traditions about the Kallikantzaroi vary from region to region, but in general they are half-animal, half-human monsters, black, hairy, with huge heads, glaring red eyes, goats' or asses' ears, blood-red tongues hanging out, ferocious tusks, monkeys' arms, and long curved nails, and commonly they have the foot of some beast. "From dawn till sunset they hide themselves in dark and dank places .., but at night they issue forth and run wildly to and fro, rending and crushing those who cross their path. Destruction and waste, greed and lust mark their course." When a house is not prepared against their coming, "by chimney and door alike they swarm in, and make havoc of the home; in sheer wanton mischief they overturn and break all the furniture, devour the Christmas pork, befoul all the water and wine and food which remains, and leave the occupants half dead with fright or violence." Many like or far worse pranks do they play, until at the crowing of the third c**k they get them away to their dens. The signal for their final departure does not come until the Epiphany, when the "Blessing of the Waters" takes place. Some of the hallowed water is put into vessels, and with these and with incense the priests sometimes make a round of the village, sprinkling the people and their houses.

Many attempts have been made to account for the Kallikantzaroi. Perhaps the most plausible explanation of the outward form, at least, of the uncanny creatures, is the theory connecting them with the masquerades that formed part of the winter festival of Dionysus and are still to be found in Greece at Christmastide. The hideous be***al shapes, the noise and riot, may well have seemed demoniacal to simple people slightly "elevated," perhaps, by Christmas feasting, while the human nature of the maskers was not altogether forgotten.
There are a number of beliefs connected with the Killantzaroi, who appear only during the 12-day period from Christmas to the Epiphany (January 6). These creatures are believed to emerge from the center of the earth and to slip into people's house through the chimney. The fireplace is kept burning day and night throughout the twelve days, to keep the spirits from entering by the chimney, a curious inversion of the visit of Santa Claus and Saint Nicolas in other countries! By the way, these two are not the same:
The original Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, was born in Turkey in the 4th century. He was very pious from an early age, devoting his life to Christianity. He became widely known for his generosity for the poor. But the Romans held him in contempt. He was imprisoned and tortured. But when Constantine became emperor of Rome, he allowed Nicholas to go free. Constantine became a Christian and convened the Council of Nicaea in 325. Nicholas was a delegate to the council. He is especially noted for his love of children and for his generosity for them. He is the patron saint of sailors in Sicily, Greece, and Russia. He is also, of course, the patron saint of children.
Epiphany in Greece.

The Greek Festival of Epiphany, or 'The Blessing of the Waters', is held every year on January 6 throughout all of Greece. This is the special occasion when many daring young Greek men brave the chilly waters to dive for a cross after it has been blessed by a priest and thrown into the water. For his gallantry, the first man who recovers the cross is said to have good luck throughout the coming year. The day long festival also features the blessing of small boats and ships, and later on affords entertainment, music, dancing and food to all those present.

An adventure holiday in Greece including riding, white water rafting, hiking and higher up on the mountains also snow shoe walking... doesn't exactly fit the picture of a holiday in Greece. But it certainly was a lot of fun!

Trikeri
The Mountain's Island

The village of Trikeri is among the 24 villages of the centaur’s mountain. It is known as the village of the three seas since the Pagasetic Gulf in the north, the north Euboean gulf on the south and the Aegean Sea on the east surround it. It is a large village, with great history built on a hill with incredible views towards the sea. Although not an island, in reality it has strong island elements and a remarkable naval tradition. The white colored houses, the old mansions and the cobbled streets are ideal for countless walks.
Its history is quite complicated, and do not be surprised if you here about the Palio (Old) and the Neo (New) Trikeri. In the beginning, there was the island of Old Trikeri (that Homer named Kikintho) that is said to be inhabited from the Stone Age. Tradition says that Jason’s Argo was grounded for maintenance here in order to continue their journey to Colchis. People lived here until the great earthquakes of the 6th century AC and later moved to the hills of Theriakonta. However, they didn’t find peace, as in the post medieval years the island suffered greatly from pirate attacks. That was the reason the island was abandoned and its people went to the land across to build the new Trikeri in a location that provided better security. Going uphill the villagers had three candles (greek: Keri). In the area where the candles went out, the hill of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) they build the church, a few houses, and the village started to develop in Mt.Tissaio. In the village operated a branch of Filiki Eteria during the 1821 revolution and its people offered a lot towards the struggle for independence.
The people of Trikeri are great fishermen, ship owners and traders. Captain’s mansions are preserved up until today and give prestigious appeal to the village. You should definitely visit the monastery of Panagia Evagelistra (Virgin Mary) built in 1835. Its history is of great interest, the reason behind the construction was an icon of Virgin Mary founded in the roots of an olive tree by the monk Damianos Koslis after a dream he had, in 1825. Today, the icon and a piece from the olive are kept in the monastery’s church. Before the monastery, there stood seven temples during the Byzantine Iconoclasm however, they were destroyed. Today the monastery has 100 cells and pilgrimage while the area will mesmerize you with the surrounding olive grooves and pine trees.
Of special interest is also the church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) a three aisled basilica, with an exceptional wood carved iconostasis. Here you'll find Napoleons throne that captains from Trikeri bought from Barcelona in 1815, and it is said that it was destined for Napoleon Bonaparte to sit in the Catalan capital. While exploring the village, you will come across other attractions. In the naval museum hosted in the impressive Koutmani mansion, you will discover great exhibits that are worth visiting.
During Easter, various fairs are organized offering a unique experience to the visitor. If you visit it during May 1, you will have the chance to witness the traditional Trikeri wedding, with songs, dances and the village’s women dressed with traditional gold-embroidered dresses. Also on the 9th and 10th of September a big festival is held with hundreds of pilgrims attendance to celebrate the event of finding the image of the Virgin Mary.
Only 4km away, is Agia Kiraki, the scenic port of the village with many colorful fishing boats decorating it. It has a wonderful sea and taverns where the visitor can taste the delicacies right from the sea. Every June, for three days the “Fishing Night” is organized where songs and dances are dominant.
Some of the best beaches are located in the Palio Trikeri island like Prasini Ammos (Greek: Green Sand) with its crystal waters and the well-known Alogoporos at the coast across, with its loving pebbles. If you love scuba diving, here you will discover one of the best destinations for sea exploration.

KALAMOS.... the small non conventional island

Kalamos is not a conventional island. It is a tall mountain range which floats on the sea, its northern side overgrowing with towering, thick pine trees. It is obvious to even the non-specialist visitor that these pines are of a special species.
They perch everywhere, even at the most precipitous points, sprouting from the rocks and reaching as far as the edge of the sea, as though they insisted on demonstrating their superiority over the place.
Even at the first sight from a distance, then, Kalamos captivates with its unusual, wild landscape. Kalamos has a surface area of around 20 square kilometres and a highest mountain peak of 200 metres.
There are around 580 permanent residents, increasing in the summer when friends and relatives visit the island.
The centre of the island is the port of Kalamos, which is on the eastern side. This is where many people sailing the Ionian moor their boats in order to visit the island, enjoy some seafood at a seaside taverna or seek refuge from bad weather.
Work being carried out for the widening the port will increase the number of boats that can be moored here and ease sea transport, which is the island's only means of communication with the rest of the world. A caique makes four to five connections to and from Mytika daily in the summer, bringing passengers and all types of goods to cover the needs of the island's few residents. The island has a simple, rural atmosphere.
The houses of Kalamos, clambering high above the port, are stone-built, most with tiled roofs, built tightly-packed next to each other and intersected by narrow, winding lanes.
The road which connects the port with the village rises quite steeply and has many bends. The few cars, used mainly for transporting goods, drive carefully along the narrow roads. A new road starting at Kalamos ascends high into the mountains and passes through an amazing pine forest, terminating at the island's other small village, Episkopi.
Here the few houses, worn by time, are used as summer residences, drawing their owners to Episkopi each year. It is as though time stopped 50 years ago. The residents' boats, a vital means of transportation and communication with the rest of the world, are kept at the small, new port. Episkopi is only ten minutes from the port to Mytika on the mainland coast of Aitoloakarnania...
On the other side of the island is Porto Leone, a charming, little bay so named by the Venetians who first drew up the maps of the area. Nearby is an old bridge built many centuries ago. The pine forest is very rare and the only other forests of this type are found on the Sporades islands in the Aegean Sea. It is a thickly-grown verdant forest, powerful and vibrant and home to many species of birds. The road from Kalamos to Episkopi also leads down to the little beach of Ayios Konstantinos. Here, right in front of the waves, there is a small and pretty private church dedicated to Ayios Donatos, a saint encountered mainly in the Ionian Islands. Built in stone with a ceramic tile roof, it stands alone with only the thick foliage to keep it company; soon it will be in need of care, however, in order to protect it for the future.
Ayios Ioannis, which is one of the oldest churches on the island, is almost completely ruined. A plaque still remains with an inscription (1648) of the date when the church was most likely built. Other churches are the church of Ayios Minas, the church of Episkopi, and Ayios Georgios in the cemetery.
The island has long been farmed. Its mountain is lower in the centre and towards the south and is much easier to farm at this point. In the past there was also vine cultivation, but all that remains of this today are the walls that were used to hold the earth in. There are many olive trees and three windmills at Agriapidia, where the whole harvest would be gathered. Kalamos has small, mainly pebbly, beaches with brilliantly clean waters, access to which is mainly from the sea.
Near the port are the beaches of Myrtia and Asproyiali, whilst further south are Agriapidia, Pefkoi and Kefali with Kedros, Alexaki, Kipoi and Trachilos to the west. The island also has some interesting caves.
The road that goes from Kalamos to Episkopi has not had much of an effect on the landscape and is ideal for all those who delight in rambling through a beautiful natural environment. The island has only a few cultural monuments. It does, however, have a remarkable natural landscape and an atmosphere which transports the visitor to eras long gone. ve a remarkable natural landscape and an atmosphere which transports the visitor to eras long gone.
