"..One of the elements of the Corfu Carnival is the Corfu PETEGOLETSIA or pete golia or petegolia (gossip), which are based on the Corfiot dialect and are performed every year on an open-air stage, in the central market of the old town in Pinia. It is a theatrical genre that is very similar to COMMEDIA DELL' ARTE, and was cultivated by the unforgettable playwright Theodoros Zamanis. Most of their writing is structured by satirical fifteen-syllable lines. They are presented by actor-presenters and their spirit encompasses flashbacks of customs, traditional types of old Corfiots and most of all the Corfiot dialect. The program is interspersed with light or satirical songs of mostly local creation, or with Ionian cantatas. All this, molded together against the backdrop of a cheerful carnival expression, with experiences of old and modern times, completes a whole that is happy, pleasant and full of color and a Corfiot tone. Finally, the finale of each performance culminates with a sketch (prose) performed from the windows of the adjacent houses. The video is from the film "The Price of Love" by Tonia Marketaki (1984) which takes place in Corfu at the beginning of the 20th century. The Corfiot Petegoletsia (the Gossip) is re-enacted every year in the Old Town center and is a very old tradition of street theatre in which, from windows overlooking the alleyways, the women exchange scurrilous gossip about what is going locally, in authentic local dialect. The performance finishes with traditional singing and musicians.."
