The City of Athens is taking action to tackle climate change.

As part of its efforts to meet the European Union’s climate neutrality goal, the City of Athens is participating in the EU Mission for 100 Climate-neutral and Smart Cities by 2030.

Meanwhile, the projects exemplify Athens’ commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to address pressing environmental and social challenges. ICLEI is a global network working with more than 2.500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development.

According to the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, both selected projects demonstrate how AI and technology are vital in helping Athens achieve its sustainability goals. “The City of Athens will actively support these projects through various means, including policy support, and public awareness campaigns. We will work closely with our academic partners, the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and the National Technical University of Athens, to ensure the successful implementation and continuity of these initiatives”, the Mayor added.

The City of Athens is proceeding with a Tourism Carrying Capacity (TCC) study of Athens’ neighborhoods. Conducted by the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA) in collaboration with the University of Piraeus and Planning Consultants Gimisis + Associates, the study aims to define the maximum number of visitors that each Athens neighborhood can host without negatively affecting its natural environment, the local economy, the everyday life of its residents and the overall visitor experience.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas discussed the study’s main objectives with representatives of Athens’ hotels, travel agencies, airlines and short-term rental associations during a meeting which was held on June 18 at the City Hall. Through the Tourism Carrying Capacity study, the Mayor argued, the City of Athens aims to create a sustainable city for both its residents and visitors.

According to ADDMA CEO, Ioannis Georgizas, the Agency will contribute to the development of this significant project by providing valuable tourism data. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

📢 We are heading to Malaga, Spain, for the IFES - International Federation of Exhibition & Event Services World Summit 2024.

This is Athens will represent the Greek Meetings Alliance (GMA) at the Summit that will take place from June 19-21.

During the summit, Public Relations Manager Tina Toribaba will participate in a panel discussion titled “The power of collaboration”, along with IAPCO President Sarah Markey-Hamm and Experiential Designers & Producers Association President Chris Griffin. They will share experiences and insight on the importance of synergies in the global meetings & events market.

Aiming to further promote Greece’s MICE industry, GMA has signed an agreement with the IFES for the development of new business partnerships and training opportunities.

The This is Athens - City Festival 2024, the City of Athens’ great spring celebration, was completed last week after 30+ days of 300+ successful events.

Held from May 1 until June 3, the third edition of the This is Athens – City Festival spread across Athens’ neighborhoods and took place in landmark locations as well as in some of the city’s less-explored parks and squares.

Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to participate in the ICCAWorld Mediterranean Αnnual Chapter Meeting 2024 that was held in Istanbul, Turkey.

As a member of the ICCA and the ICCA Mediterranean Chapter, This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau took part in a number of discussions, meetings and parallel events. This is Athens-CVB International Meetings Manager Natasha Kefala participated in a panel discussion with Monica Conti, Manager at Roma & Lazio Convention & Visitors Bureau and Elif Balci Fisunoglu, Vice General Manager at Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency to discuss the role of cultural heritage in the marketing strategy of Mediterranean destinations.

The Meeting’s diverse programme offered the opportunity to ICCA Mediterranean Chapter Members to exchange insight on the industry’s latest trends and developments.

Athens continues its efforts to build strong ties with the Chinese travel market.
Last week, we traveled to Shanghai to attend the ITB China, the leading B2B travel trade show focusing on the Chinese tourism industry. During the 3-day event, we had the opportunity to meet with top buyers from leading Chinese companies that seek to develop their business in Athens. We conducted over 50 one-to-one meetings with key players of the Chinese travel market, while we held more than 20 meetings with key decision makers of the Chinese MICE industry. Our team also attended networking and social events and the ITB China conference that took place as a parallel event.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency Ioannis Georgizas participated in an event dedicated to the cultures of Greece and China that took place in Athens on May 24, in the presence of Chinese Ambassador to Athens Xiao Junzheng. Titled “When Liangzhu Ancient City meets the Acropolis of Athens: A dialogue between Chinese and Greek Civilization” the event was also attended by Greek and Chinese officials as well as archaeologists who discussed ways of protecting cultural heritage and strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.

💫 Athens shined at IMEX Frankfurt 2024.

The City of Athens participated in one of the world’s leading trade shows for the MICE industry. During IMEX 2024:

💼 This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau conducted over 110 B2B meetings with high-profile meeting professionals and representatives of leading MICE companies at This is Athens' booth.

🎤 We presented Athens' growing meetings and events market to hosted buyers from North & South America, India, Germany and other countries at 8 group presentations, organized by the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO).

🍹As a founding member of the Greek Meetings Alliance (GMA), Athens co-hosted a delightful cocktail event full of Greek flavors and spirits, in collaboration with the GNTO.

🚀 We attended the 2nd Global Forum of the National Convention Bureaux which was hosted by the Strategic Alliance of the National Convention Bureaux of Europe. We represented the GMA and joined representatives from national convention bureaux worldwide.

🌐 We strengthened the city’s relations with international partners by attending numerous meetings, workshops and social events such as the ICCA Mediterranean Chapter meeting, the ICCA Destination Marketing Sector Session with the International Alliance for Impact, the “DI Pathfinders networking breakfast” as well as ICCAWorld’s and IAPCO's social gatherings.

🏆 During IMEX 2024, Athens received a prestigious recognition: The city ranked 11th in Europe and 15th in the world as a conference, meetings, and events destination, according to the ICCA World Annual Report 2023. Last year, Athens hosted 88 in-person international association meetings which contributed to the city’s economic growth and development.

The City of Athens is taking bold steps towards a sustainable future. Last week the City officially launched its new Energy Poverty Alleviation Office in the presence of Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.

The Office aims to provide Athens’ residents with valuable information and advice on how to efficiently confront energy issues and reduce energy costs. The Office includes 60 certified advisors who offer energy saving solutions to vulnerable households as well as information on innovative funding tools.

The City of Athens is taking action to build strong ties with China in the fields of tourism and culture. Last month, the Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (ADDMA) and the China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, with the aim to exchange knowhow in the fields of culture, tourism, the film and television industry as well as to jointly participate in international film and TV festivals, and exhibitions around the world.

In early April, ADDMA executives also traveled to Shanghai to participate in a B2B event titled “Bridging cultures in Travel: From Asia to Greece”, which marked the launch of the first direct flight between Athens and Shanghai, operated by Juneyao Airlines. This is Athens, in collaboration with the Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", co-hosted a press trip for a group of leading journalists and influencers from the Chinese market, who arrived in Athens with Juneyao’s inaugural flight.

Thoroughly designed with a sustainable mindset, the City of Athens' annual spring celebration will last for more than a month - up until June 2nd. Athens hosted the Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony on Friday, April 26, at the Panathenaic Stadium, the home of the first modern Olympics.

The magnificent event which marked the end of the Olympic Torch Relay in Greece and the start of the Olympic Flame’s journey to Marseille in the south of France, on board the “Bélem”, a majestic three-masted vessel.

Following its arrival to France, the Olympic Flame will begin its long journey to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on July 26.
