The existence of the great #Homer is shrouded in legend. Nothing is known about his true identity, nor about his birth or death.
Some say he was from Chios, others from Smyrna or Ionia, in modern-day Turkey; still others suggest the Greek island of #Ios, the birthplace of his mother #Clymene and the final stop on his long journey, returning from Athens.
It is said that he died on this very island, at #Plakoto, where a symbolic tomb now stands, visited by thousands of tourists each year.
In this beautiful panoramic location, you can see the stone slab with inscriptions, but also the Aegean Sea in all its splendor. This is highly evocative: Homer, after all, had a deep connection with the sea, a central element of his works (especially the #Odyssey). 🌊
Placing the tomb in this fascinating place evokes the stormy waves that Ulysses crossed, as well as the settings of other epic poems that shaped the history and literature of ancient Greece.

Η ύπαρξη του μεγάλου #Ομήρου καλύπτεται από θρύλους. Τίποτα δεν είναι γνωστό για την πραγματική του ταυτότητα, ούτε για τη γέννηση ή τον θάνατό του.
Κάποιοι λένε ότι ήταν από τη Χίο, άλλοι από τη Σμύρνη ή την Ιωνία, στη σημερινή Τουρκία. άλλοι πάλι προτείνουν το ελληνικό νησί #Ίο, τη γενέτειρα της μητέρας του #Κλυμένη και τον τελευταίο σταθμό στο μακρύ ταξίδι του, επιστρέφοντας από την Αθήνα.
Λέγεται ότι πέθανε σε αυτό ακριβώς το νησί, στο #Πλακωτό, όπου βρίσκεται τώρα ένας συμβολικός τάφος, τον οποίο επισκέπτονται χιλιάδες τουρίστες κάθε χρόνο.

In Greek Orthodox churches it is used for 3 main purposes:
-Offering ‘Πρόσφορο’ ➡ offering made by the faithful, blessed and used for the #Holy Eucharist.
-Antigift ‘Αντίδωρο’ ➡ The antigift is a part of the offering that is not used for Holy Communion. It is given to the faithful after the service as a #Blessing. It symbolizes communion with Christ and the church community.
-Artoclasia ‘Αρτοκλασία’ ➡ Artoclasia is a special ceremony during which bread and oil are blessed. It is a reference to the multiplication of loaves by Christ and symbolizes God's abundance and blessing.

The archaeological site of #Pyrgos is a must-visit for anyone who loves archaeology!
It is located on the island of #Amorgos, specifically in the wider region of ancient #Arkesini. 🏛️
Here, you can see the remains of the ancient city, as well as pottery, inscriptions, and tools that will transport you into the daily life of its ancient inhabitants.
The main attraction is a Mycenaean-era tower, built using the Cyclopean construction technique, which involved placing large stone blocks without mortar.
According to Greek tradition, the Cyclopes were the first to build fortifications in this way.
But the tower is much more than that: during invasions, it was used as a refuge and as a communication point with adjacent towers through fire signals.

The Katafyki Cave is one of the most fascinating geological wonders of #Kythnos! 🪨
It is located in #Dryopida, a picturesque traditional village in the south of the island.
Composed of spacious chambers and high walls, it preserves rock formations shaped by water over the years. Inside, you'll find a wide variety of #stalactites and #stalagmites in different shapes, sizes, and colors. These cavities have been inhabited since ancient times: it is said that the cave was used as a place of religious worship and protection against supernatural forces. During World War II, the inhabitants of Kythnos used it as a shelter to protect themselves from aerial bombings.
But there's more, according to some local legends, the cave was home to evil spirits and demons. This is why propitiatory rituals were performed to enter safely.

According to legend, it was on this small rocky island, just a few miles from Mykonos, that the ancient gods #Apollo and #Artemis were born.

According to the myth, this happened because the king wanted to sacrifice not the sacred bull to the god Poseidon, but another from his herd.

Γνωρίζεις την ιστορία της Αριάδνης και του Μινώταυρου της Κρήτης; Λοιπόν, γεννήθηκε εδώ, στο υπέροχο Παλάτι της Κνωσού!
Σύμφωνα με τον μύθο, χτίστηκε από τον βασιλιά Μίνωα, που ήθελε να φυλακίσει το τέρας μισό άνθρωπο και μισό ταύρο, που γεννήθηκε από το τρελό πάθος της γυναίκας του, Πασιφάης, για έναν ταύρο. 🐃
Σύμφωνα με τον μύθο, αυτό συνέβη επειδή ο βασιλιάς ήθελε να θυσιάσει όχι τον ιερό ταύρο στον θεό Ποσειδώνα, αλλά έναν άλλο από το κοπάδι του.
