Celebrating Oxi Day with Thassos and all Greece!

Greek word ‘Όχι’ means ‘No’. The holiday commemorates the rejection by Greek prime minister of the dictator Mussolini’s ultimatum demanding to obey and let the country be occupied.

Thus involved in the WW2, for months the Greek army resisted many times superior forces of the enemy proving that not number of weapons and equipment makes you strong, but your people and their unity.

For me it is also about inner strength to make difficult decisions. So I took half-day off today specifically to go to Limenas for the parade.

The atmosphere of the holiday is so cosy and sunny with people in national clothing and flags displayed all over. Special thanks for the company and explanations to who added even more beams of light to this day.

Feeling and actually being small and temporary like a leaf of a great tree that was here long before us and even couple generations and probably will be.

In fact, much of the tremendous legacy like marble, Giola, century trees or man-made like Agora, Kastro or Acropolis are helping these days to ground into that now moment from the news feed.

Love the autumn vibe of silence and privacy away from the crazy mainland. Especially priceless in 2022.

And my curiosity cant stop thinking about how old this tree growing in the middle of ancient stone road could be?

Happy Holiday, dear island! 💙 October 18 is celebrated as Thassos day and I take this opportunity to congratulate the place I feel home and my fellow islanders on the very special day for all of us.

The only place I keep coming back 9th time already! Could be easy to say that I have nothing to compare with, but I do know what I’m talking about!

As a person who’s been to Thailand, South Korea, Germany, Spain, Ibiza, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Emirates, Slovakia, Austria, Mongolia, China, Belarus, Crimea, crossed half of Russia: Altai, Baikal lake, Buryatia, Dagestan, Dombay, Chechnya, Sochi and many more!

Just this year lived 2 months in Egypt, then crossed the route from Astrakhan through Caucasus to Moscow, after went to Saint-Petersburg and 100km away of it almost to the Finnish border, flew to Minsk, and Turkey… And now here again…

Feels like the best day to celebrate my 1 month living on the island and almost 150 days total since 2015.

3️⃣ reasons this photo is here.

I know I disappeared for quiet long time from both of my accounts. It’s been a month that I live in Cairo and just now managed to put the mind in order.

🔹Reason 1
This autumn during the visit to Theologos museum I learnt from a lady there that Thasos was under Egyptian rule for about hundred years.

I wanted to visit Egypt before, but this information made it even more curious to see the country who was in charge of the island for so long.

🔹Reason 2
During trekking walks here and there I found old boards saying “built with the funding and supervision of Mohammed Ali”.

I was curious why the Egyptian ruler spent so much effort and money for a far away island he got as a present from Ottomans. And I found the answer here in Egypt with the help of (Thanks, Yannis!)

🔹Reason 3
As of account description I promised to share not only Thassos content but also a bit about other destinations that I travel to.

And being an arabic learner Egypt was a must to attend. Luckily I have a local friend here to live in Egyptian family and see this culture from inside.

So here we are with the photos of New Cairo, region that I call home for a while.

“I’d post regularly!” – I thought, but…

In philosophic parables called Buridan, a donkey died being not able to decide which of two heystacks it should eat.

Same with me, I got so many nice photo from the island that end up not being able to choose one.

Second problem is the text – I still can’t decide whether to share my stories and thoughts or just keep it ‘photo only’.

So here we are with rare, random date content 🤷🏻‍♀️

How to get to Thassos from mainland?

There are two (and let’s call it «a half») options as the island is connected with the mainland via two ports: Thassos and Skala Prinos.

1️⃣ Ferry Keramoti – Thassos city (or often called Limenas) is the shortest and easiest way. It will take you about 40 minutes depending on the weather and ferries start every half an hour.

Good option if you travel by car or if you arrive via Kavala airport, situated within easy reach from Keramoti.

2️⃣ Ferry Kavala – Skala Prinos takes a much longer way: about 1.2h and and the schedule is not that frequent, couple of times a day, especially off touristic season.

A huge plus of this variant is that Kavala is a big city with a bus route to Thessaloniki and other locations. And that makes it easier. During the summer operates till late at night.

3️⃣ Dolphin Kavala – Thassos city (Limenas) is for me a «half option» as I managed to catch it only once since 2015 due to rare schedule during tourist season.

A super fast way to get without vehicle from Limenas to Kavala for 45 minutes and enjoy the island skyline along the way.

Timetables available online via web, facebook or instagram. Feel free to ask for tips as for my 8 times I used every available means to get to the island: from Thessaloniki, Kavala airport, by bus, by car, both from Kavala and Keramoti.

Btw off season one of my favourite entertainments is to see the last ferry leave from Skala Prinou thinking that till tomorrow we are cut off that big and scary world 🙃

A story! Throwback to 2015.

Once upon a time there lived a girl. One day she travelled to… Thailand and posted some nice photo from Phuket. You wonder how is that connected with Thassos? Wait!

Her friends liked the post, but out of all comments there was one from a stranger. The girl decided to learn a bit more and clicked on the author’s page.

The commenter turned out to be a traveller. Last photo on whose feed was especially attractive – unbelievably white pebbles with crystal turquoise waters. Geotag read ‘Saliara’.

– Hm, – she thought, – we need to go there!
– But there are no tours, no directs flights and we need a visa, – said her friend.
– Not a problem!

After 8 days from that moment she made this photo at Saliara.

No matter which part of the world the girl travels every year since then, the only place she keeps coming back – is a small greek island with emerald pines and the whitest marble.

The girl is me. And since 2015 I have been to Thassos 8 times and count of days spent here goes over 100. Thassos island, Greece] is created to share the island through my eyes how I see it.

At an altitude of 500m there is a small village Kastro in the interior of the Greek island of Thassos. Named after the ruins of an existing castle the village is known for its authenticity carried through ages. Besides the remarkable preserved architecture Kastro has some cultural points.

There is the church of Saint Athanasios which was built in 1804, in 40 days by the respective permission of the Sultan (as during that times the island was under Ottoman reign) and a little church on the father hill of the village behind which on the remains of the old citadel (acropolis) is the village's ossuary.

🚗 Kastro is situated in the northeastern side of Limenaria in a distance of 12km and can be reached from central crossroad of the city via picturesque asphalt road. Second option is for offroad vehicles from Theologos by a dirt road.
