Today, on Sunday, April 16th, 2023 Greeks celebrate the Greek Orthodox Easter. "Pascha" (=Easter), as also known, is the most important religious feast of the year, with customs and traditions that have been part of Christianity for two thousand years.

After 40 days from Clean/Ash Monday, on Easter Sunday, Greeks thank and honor the miracle of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the death and the promise of an afterlife.

Today on March 25th, Greeks all around the world are celebrating Greek Independence Day!

The celebration of the Greek Revolution of 1821, as also known, takes place in Greece, Cyprus and big centres of Greek diaspora on March 25th every year with military and school students parades.

This holiday acknowledges the successful Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) was fought to liberate and decolonize Greece from four centuries of Ottoman occupation.

The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25th, 1821, when Orthodox Metropolitan of Patras, Bishop Germanos, raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra (=Holy Lavra) in the Peloponnese.
The cry “Freedom or Death” became the motto of the revolution.

This day is coinciding with the Greek Orthodox Church’s celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Virgin Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God.

Ash or Clean Monday (known as ‘Kathará Deftéra’) is a popular annual holiday here in Greece as it is the first day of Great Lent throughout Eastern Christianity. 🪁🪁

Greeks celebrate this day with fun, outdoor activities - like flying their colourful kites in the sunny sky, as it symbolises "trying to reach the Divine" - and picnics in the countryside, called ‘koulouma’, when they eat traditional foods like olives and local seafood.
