Today on March 25th, Greeks all around the world are celebrating Greek Independence Day!
The celebration of the Greek Revolution of 1821, as also known, takes place in Greece, Cyprus and big centres of Greek diaspora on March 25th every year with military and school students parades.
This holiday acknowledges the successful Greek War of Independence (1821โ1829) was fought to liberate and decolonize Greece from four centuries of Ottoman occupation.
The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25th, 1821, when Orthodox Metropolitan of Patras, Bishop Germanos, raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra (=Holy Lavra) in the Peloponnese.
The cry โFreedom or Deathโ became the motto of the revolution.
This day is coinciding with the Greek Orthodox Churchโs celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Virgin Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God.
