Our 1.30'-2 hour tour starts from the enchanting Venetian harbour, next to the public car park at the western end of Rethymno harbour. After a historical introduction to the city of Rethymno with a view of the Venetian facade, we walk along the traditional restaurants of the port, through the narrow streets of the old town with a short stop at the Loggia, a meeting point of the Venetian Elite, very well preserved. Further to the Rimondi fountain with its three lion heads, which still pour water into their basins, passing the local small shops and restaurants, we reach The Neratzes (or Gazi Hussein) Mosque and its towering minaret and further to its basilica St. Francis, built by the Venetians as a Franciscan church with its beautiful Renaissance door. On the way we will have the opportunity to see a shop with traditional Cretan musical instruments and to talk about the very special Cretan music. Our next stop is the phyllo pastry shop, the only one left with a history of over 80 years. On the way to the Venetian castle of Fortezza we will have the opportunity to visit a Greek Orthodox church and give some information on the similarities and differences with other Christian churches. We continue to reach the Venetian fortress of Fortezza, built by the Greek residents of Rethymno during the Venetian rule, to protect them from pirate attacks, located on top of the hill overlooking Fortezza to the tiled roofs of the old town, (we only see it from the outside). Finally we have the option to stop at a local tavern for a short branch of Greek yogurt and honey and a coffee break. Our tour ends here and you can walk on your own through the old town market with lots of souvenirs and other shops.
