Xenophon Zolotas (1904-2004), a greek economist and academician.

22/02/2016

Xenophon Zolotas (1904-2004) was an economist and academician. He served as administrator of the National Bank of Greece as well as Prime Minister.
He studied Law at the Universities of Athens and Leipzig, Economics in Paris and completed his studies in London.
He served as Professor, initially at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and subsequently at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 1952 he was elected to be a member of Athens Academy.
He participated in international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations (UN), the Monetary Committee and the Financial European Committee.
He was appointed Minister of Coordination twice, Administrator of the National Bank of Greece and Prime Minister -as the president of the transitional government- in 1989.
Two of the speeches that he gave (in 1957 and 1959) in the UN while he was Administrator of the National Bank of Greece, have gone down in history, due to the fact that while they were delivered in the English language, all the words that he used -excluding prepositions, links and articles- were of Greek origin.

Following is the speech of 1957

«Kyrie,

I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus and the Oecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms methods and policies, although there is an episode of cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas. With enthusiasm we dialogue and synagonize at the synods of our didymous Organizations in which polymorphous economic ideas and dogmas are analyzed and synthesized. Our critical problems such as the numismatic plethora generate some agony and melancholy. This phenomenon is characteristic of our epoch. But, to my thesis we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe. In parallel a panethnic unhypocritical economic synergy and harmonization in a democratic climate is basic. I apologize for my eccentric monologue. I emphasize my eucharistia to your Kyrie to the eugenic and generous American Ethnos and to the organizers and protagonists of this Amphictyony and the gastronomic symposia».

Vouliagmeni Lake

One of the most beautiful natural sceneries in Attica land.
Almost 2000 years ago, the top of a cave collapsed and Vouliagmeni Lake was revealed. Its brackish water has healing effects and it springs from a depth of 50 - 100 m.The Lake is supplied from a 17-metre-deep fresh water spring, but it is also connected to the sea. The water temperature ranges from 23 to 27 °C and this is the reason why it has swimmer-visitors all year round. Vouliagmeni Lake is a unique scenery worth of visiting, not only during the day, but also at night when it's beautifully lit. I look forward to visiting it with you and while we're there, why not take a dive as well!

A few words about Solon

At the beginning of the 6th century B.C, the famous lawmaker and poet, Solon, lives in Athens. He came from a wealthy family of aristocrats. After he lost his entire fortune, he turned to trade and travelled to Egypt and Asia Minor. He studied several civilizations and socio-economic systems.

At that time, Athens was suffering from a violent and lengthy insurrection of the citizens against the caste of the nobles.
Solon was called to mediate and was soon elected Archon (Chief magistrate) and was given exceptional powers.
He was a very bold legislator.

Solon defined which public offices a person would be eligible for, according to the social class they belonged to. Yet, the criterion was not wealth, but rather tax-paying ability.
Another of his reforms was that he freed all people who had been enslaved due to debt. He abolished borrowing money in exchange for personal freedom. Finally, the lower socio-economic classes were granted the right to participate in Ecclesia and vote.

Hephaestus

The Greek god of fire, technology, craftmanship and metallurgy.
He was the son of Zeus and Hera. His wife was the most beautiful goddess of all, the goddess of love, Aphrodite (Venus). And yet Hephaestus was lame. The ancient Greeks not only dared worship a disabled god but appointed him patron deity of Creativity and Art. Such is the unique splendor of the Ancient Greek Spirit!

In 448 b.c during Ecclesia, Athenians -with the encouragement of Pericles- decided to rebuild all the sanctums that had been destroyed by the Persians.

They chose two architects, Iktinos and Kallikrates to design and supervise the construction of the Parthenon, and they appointed sculptor Feidias as general supervisor of the project, also making him responsible for the decorative sculptures.

When it was completed, the Athenians dedicated Parthenon to their patron goddess Parthenos (Virgin) Athena, for saving their city from the Persians.

The first King of Athens, according to Pausanias, was Actaeus.
Attika region was named after him and this was as well the name of the city of Athens, but afterwards they called it Cecropia to honour the second King of Athens, Cecrops, who married Aktaios' daughter, Agraulus.
It was during Cecrops' reign that the duel between goddess Athina and god Poseidon took place, resulting in the city's renaming to Athens.
Cecrops is also credited with enacting several laws, the invention of a writing system, a population cencus, abolishing human sacrifices and the certain way houses were constructed.
His place of worship was Erechtheion and he was said to have the form of a snake.

The motive

Mr. Nigel from Australia. I have never met a client more thirsty for knowledge. Together in Marathon, we aimed to spot the place where the Persians had set camp, the camp of the Athenians; we tried to find out how they moved, the route Efklis took, how Miltiades moved…

All in all, an amazing experience.

Two Olympian gods, Athina daughter of Zeus,
who was spawned from her father's head, goddess of Wisdom
and her uncle, Poseidon, brother of Zeus, ruler of the Seas,
both desire to become the patron deity of the same city.

This is the only case, as far as I know, in mythologies and religions all around the world, that the decision is not for the gods to make.There was something much more powerful;

The gods offered the citizens gifts to get them on their side.

Poseidon offered salty water.
Athena's gift was the olive tree.

The citizens voted, they decided.
DEMOCRACY was born.

The city appointed Athena as its patron deity.
They named it after her.
They called it ATHINAI
