“Sfakiani Pita”

A pie of local fame, Sfakiani pita originates from Sfakia. Pita stands for pie and Sfakiani is the adjective deriving from the word Sfakia, ie the name of a southern prefecture of Crete. This thin pie is something between a crepe and a pancake, filled with a delicious, soft, cheese.

One of the most beautiful historical monuments in Rethymno is the Venetian lighthouse! It was constructed in 1830 by the Egyptians according to the Arabic script which was written on the door of the lighthouse. It is 9meters tall and is the second biggest lighthouse in Crete. It is stonebuilt and its construction is based on the Ottoman architecture of the minaret. It has been classified as a cultural heritage monument since 1965.

Monastery of Saint George in Selinari.

The monastery is built in the center of the Selinari Gorge.
It was built between 926-1204 and was destroyed by Chaïrentín Barmparósa in 1538. It was rebuilt a few years after and it is considered miraculous. There are a few testimonials of miracles that happened there. According to the legend there was a shepherd who lied while he was touching the icon of the saint and his hand stuck on the icon! Only when he told the truth his hand came off!
Nowadays it operates a modern nursing home, built on the ruins of the old cells of the monastery. The monks are very friendly and willing to inform people about the history of the monastery.

Domestic Muskovy duck(cairina moschata), a native American duck who has been domesticated over the centuries! Columbus himself brought the species to Europe! They are larger than common ducks and more silent!
