A few photos from the chapel on the mountain, the permission is in place now to camp at the barbeque site, so the two day trek is a go ahead as soon as the covid restrictions are lifted. The pile of rocks at the summit is in commemoration of the villagers from kalirachi (formerly kaki rachi, bad ridge) village killed by pirates

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when or how piracy originated but it goes without saying that Thassos was one of the many islands that had to go through some rather tough times thanks to plundering pirates who poured in from all over. When Thassos became a part of the Byzantine Empire after 330 AD, piracy grew enormously in the area. They left no stone unturned literally destroying villages all over the island, killing thousands of innocent locals and sometimes transporting them to be sold as slaves.

The locals out of fear started to build newer villages further away from the coastline that was well hidden in the mountains. They left only the vigilara who were essentially guards who sent warnings with fires by the coasts. It is worth noting that the pirates were pure Europeans, sometimes even Greeks who were extremely cruel. They considered their occupation to be honest and dignified often teaching it to their children so that the next generation could carry on their legacy.

The island of green and blue colours fascinates with its spectacular natural beauty. Emerald waters and virgin natural surroundings create the best scenery for your holiday. The island is ideal for those who want to be active, offering options of hiking, mountain biking, motorbikes, horse riding in Skala Prinos and diving in Panagia Isle shipwreck.

An interesting visit, due to its special geological formation, is Giola, a natural pool in the sea. It's quite a walk and make sure that the weather is suitable. If it’s windy, it’s difficult and dangerous to swim in this little pool but if the weather is good there is an excellent 13 metre dive into the water
Saliara beach is one of the best on the island and Right after Saliara there is Porto Vathy (you’ll need a jeep style car to reach but it’s worth the ride). Alykes is known for the cold water, Paradise is popular for its turquoise waters and Glyfoneri is again a must visit. All three of them have superb taverns to eat after swimming.

Additionally, Cave of Drakotripa is one more visit you have to make, due to its interesting stalagmites formation. From the monastery of Archagel Michael in Limenaria you will take pictures of an amazing view. Lastly, the Ancient Theatre is very atmospheric, but check before you go, it was under renovation until recently.

Where to eat: possibly the best seafood restaurant on the island is Klisma seafood restaurant in Skala kallirachi, it has a superb menu with fish literally caught as you wait.
Mouses make the best pizza and the best bread in their wooden oven.
Kazaviti is a tavern in the heart of Prinos village, among the plane trees.
Symi in Limenas has great fish and for the best souvlaki visit Nice2MeatYou in Limenas and Koutsoura in Potamia. For dinner with a gourmet, twist visit the Enavlion Batayanni.
Lastly, for the best bougatsa all roads lead to Sakis! For drinks go to the rock style Karanti and to the romantic –with large pillows on the beach- Karnagio

Based on the beautiful Greek island of Thassos we specialise in affordable holiday homes, both on the beach and in the villages of Klisma, kallirachi and Skala kallirachi

The properties are privately owned by Sam & Michelle Harvey an English couple who have lived on the island for over ten years and do much to promote off grid tourism there, the properties range from a beach side cabin that sleeps up to 4, to a large house that can accommodate groups of up to 20, with prices starting from £150 pp per week.

The pathways and cycle tracks are endless on the island as cars still can't reach everywhere and there are some incredible places to visit. These include the house of bones, not for the squeamish and the quarries where some of the best marble in the world was mined, combine this with the stunning beaches, forests and mountains Thassos is the perfect place to get away from it all, especially as there are a plethora of dining places locally.

Just across the water on the mainland in Macedonian Greece they are excavating an area they believe may contain the grave of Alexander the Great, near his birthplace.

Hopefully the island will soon become a winter sun location as Sam and Michelle have now got permission to rent out 365 days of the year & can sort bike hire, car hire or guided walks through the mountains.( Iain Ashby will be leading some of these through the winter months 2021/22)

If you wish to have any more information, please message me or contact Sam direct on +44 7493 675761.
