[read here a critic's notes on Rick Treffers' latest album: The Opposite Of Never]

Everything about Rick Treffers is different. Most artists break through at a young age and then have to fight against obscurity. Treffers toured Europe for decades with the band Mist, widely respected but always on the sidelines. Since that band fell apart, the Dutchman living in Spain has experienced a remarkable rise. The change came in 2018 with the publication of his novel debut Ik Wou Dat Ik Jouw Leven Had (I wish I lived your life). The rave reviews and good sales were apparently the push that Rick Treffers needed, because since then his music has been lighter in tone, richer in sound and produced with much more self-confidence. His first English-language solo album Looking For A Place To Stay made it to the OOR annual lists in 2021 and the Dutch-language Levensdrift (2022) was also well received. The Opposite Of Never once again offers melancholic, orchestral pop with beautifully arranged polyphonic vocals. In terms of atmosphere and timbre, the album falls between Leonard Cohen and Sufjan Stevens. Showdown, My Wishful Singing, All In Your Head and Hummingbird are the anchors that lead to the key song, the beautiful post-breakup ballad Hang On, a song that offers comfort as the best pop music.
