It was a beautiful day yesterday for the Epiphany celebrations in the village of Petriti.
Petriti is the next village along the coast from us - just a 5 minute drive away - and is Corfu's main fishing port. It was so lovely to see so many people from both Petriti and neighbouring villages out on the harbour yesterday to watch the Blessing of the Waters in the sunshine.
The tradition is that a priest, surrounded by brave young men and boys, throws a cross into the sea. The minute the cross leaves the priest’s hand, the divers jump into the water to catch the cross. The lucky one who finds and returns the cross is blessed by the priest.
Just three very brave souls made the jump yesterday - despite it looking like a summer's day the water must have been freezing! - but at least they had some warm sunshine to help them dry off.
