"Olympia" Thessaloniki Documentary Festival 2nd March 2019
Resistant to being defined solely as a woman in a male dominated society, Olympia Dukakis struggles to find a sense of belonging.
"Olympia" had its world premiere at this year's DOC NYC with a sold out theatre of over 500 seats and many amazing reviews (including the Hollywood Reporter). "Olympia" is not your typical bio-doc. As one of the reviewers mentions, our film is closer to the Joan Rivers documentary than anything else.
“Olympia” takes us on a poetic journey in search of one’s place in the world by intricately weaving impromptu personal moments with Olympia Dukakis. Resistant to being defined solely as a woman in a male dominated society, she struggles to find a sense of belonging due to the dichotomy she has always felt between her American values and those of her immigrant parents.
Here are some quotes (I'm including a few too many but I think it makes it clearer as to the kind of film this is:
“Olympia” delivers an uncommonly personal, cinema verite-style portrait of its fascinating, iconoclastic subject. It's the more intimate moments that prove most arresting, and in some cases, hilarious. Olympia emerges as a compelling profile of a woman who's defiantly marched to the beat of her own drum. - Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
Olympia Dukakis finally gets the biographical documentary she deserves. In terms of its frankness, it’s only matched by the crown jewel of this subgenre, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. - Rich Juzwiak, Jezebel
Olympia Dukakis may be in her 80s, but she is more passionate, real and progressive than a million woke millennials screaming on the internet. This, folks, is why we respect our elders. Watch Olympia and find out why Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin calls her “an octogenarian mo********er. - Chuck Foster, Film Threat
A thoroughly captivating film, befitting it’s arresting star. - David Morgan/CBS Films
It was amazing. Harry did a masterful job weaving it together so beautifully. That Lesvos scene….grand slam with those old ladies. Harry turned a conversation about nothing into a conversation about everything. - Greg Pappas - The Pappas Post
Truly outstanding. A brilliant tribute to living authentically. Harry captured Olympia — an icon, an inspiration, a supernova (!) — with such sensitivity, respect and artistry. Definitely one of my top favourite films of 2018. - Pamela Segger, ED of Lunenburg Doc Fest
Director / Producer - Harry Mavromichalis
