Clean Monday is one of our most beloved feasts in Greece.
🎊It marks the beginning of Lent before Easter and puts and end to Carnival, a festive three-week season full of parties, where people dress up in disguise with costumes and masks.
🦑Greeks celebrate this special day outdoors with friends and family, eating seafood like calamari and octopus, drinking tsipouro or ouzo and finishing of their lunch with halva, our delicious tahini-based dessert.
🪁Greek skies are full of colourful kites, a fun activity for kids who love to compete on whose kite flies higher.

Greek spirits for the holidays and Winter

“Arbaroriza”: These scented leaves of Geranium 🌿 (also used to flavour fruit preserves) combined with Greek wine or grappa produce a unique liqueur with distinctive lemony aroma and amber colour. We usually serve it as a welcoming drink or digestive.

“Rakomelo”: A sweet alcoholic drink that is traditionally served warm. Rakomelo is formed with the words “raki” (Cretan distilled grappa also known as “tsikoudia”) and “meli” 🍯 (honey: our favourite sweetener). Nowadays, this drink also contains spices like cinnamon. It is considered to be a home remedy for a sore throat!

“Fatourada”: The traditional liqueur of Kythira island. The name "fatοurada" originates from Italy and it is used to describe processed “tsipouro” (or raki, tsikoudia), to which cinnamon and cloves are added. Sometimes, the dried skins from fruit such as tangerine, orange or apricot are added. 🍊 Usually served with a homemade sweet like “pasticheto”.

“Oinomelo”: An aromatic, warm wine which can be found in different variations with ingredients like honey, herbs and spices. Hippocrates refers to Oinomelo as a medicine which should be consumed by everyone, as it has a number of beneficial properties. 🍷

Our best Greek soups 🍲 for the winter are waiting for you to discover them below.

“Kakavia”: Called kakavia from the word “kakavi”, the name in ancient Greek for a large pot in which fish were boiled with olive oil and onions. 🐟 The smaller and more bone-filled the fish, the tastier the kakavia becomes.

“Fakes soupa”: An easy-to-make traditional Greek lentil soup. The recipe is traditionally made with brown lentils, as these are the type most commonly found in Greece. The best way to enjoy this soup is with a slice of sourdough bread and Kalamata olives 🍈 .

“Fasolada”: Our national dish 🥘 is a bean soup that we traditionally eat during the cold winter months. The word “fasolada” derives from the Greek word “fasoli”, which means bean. For Greeks, it’s definitely the most comforting dish that we remember from when we were still kids.

“Avgolemono”: This is a silky and rich chicken soup, prepared Greek-style with avgolemono (egg-lemon sauce). Since forever here, when you caught a cold, grandma would bring you some warm “avgolemono” soup 🍋 and that would fix everything.

Learn about the Greek Christmas traditional pies! 🎄
Vasilopita is the traditional cake that the Greeks serve at midnight on New Year's Eve 🎉 to celebrate the life of Saint Basil. After the cake is baked we insert a coin through the base, we cut it, and then the person who finds the coin inside their piece is said to be granted luck for the rest of the year!

Hristopsomo 🍞 is the traditional bread that women carefully bake one day before Christmas Eve to honour the memory of Christ. It is the special bread of the Christmas table and it’s considered to bring blessings to the life of the householder and his family. Local customs and traditions around Greece determine its shape and decorations.

Pomegranate , in Greek is “rodi”, and it symbolises wealth and fertility since ancient times in Greece. This is why on New Year’s each householder smashes one pomegranate in front of the entrance of their house. When they “perform the ritual”, they also say a few words: “May the new year bring us health, joy and happiness and the more this “rodi” pops open, the more abundance our home 🏠 to have throughout the year”.
