Trekking Milos Scenic Trails
Route M-1: "Adamas Secrets"
One very interesting and pleasant route begins from the beach of Lagada, located at the western part of the settlement of Adamas, The route follows the old dirt road and connects together some very important natural and geological elements of the large volcanic history of Milos.
Only about 200 meters from Lagada, you may see some bizarre black rocks at the artificial slopes of the dirt road. These are obsidian rocks within the lavas that feature the hill of Bombarda. Milos was thriving in prehistoric era, when its inhabitants used to gauge and then to trade this peculiar volcanic rock, since it was used in a variety of ways, including hunting and house activities. Adamas Obsidian, as we have named these outcrops, is a very significant spot since you may touch them and study them just in front of your eyes. Please make sure that you will not extract any rocks from their natural position.
Approximately 600 meters from the obsidian, you will see the French Military Cemetery, a WWII remnant. After that, the small but significant Adamas Wetland begins. This is actually a small lagoon in immediate contact with the sea and it is an environmentally protected area.
Most people ignore a hidden treasure at the very end of the dirt road, since they pause walking before reaching there. But we strongly recommend visiting this spot. It is the Adamas Fumarole, a natural cove at the foothills of Bombarda, where you may observe volcanic gas emissions. Smoke comes out of the cove, the temperature is remarkably higher and a characteristic smell of Sulphur is all round the cove. Make sure you do not get too close and not to distract any minerals you may see there.
In case you select to run this route at the early evening, you may get close to the lighthouse and admire the sunset from there, but in that case make sure you have carried some light in order to return safely to Adamas. ;)
