Route M-5: "The Smoke Route"
Agia Kyriaki - Fyriplaka Volcano Crater - Kalamos Fumaroles

A place that captures imagination! A bare mountaintop overlooking the south sea of Milos. There, in the galleries of an abandoned mine, the earth is steaming. Volcanic gases escaping to the atmosphere make us feel we are inside a boiling cauldron.

The low mountain of Kalamos rises above the western end of Agia Kyriaki. The area surrounding it, as well as all central and southeastern Milos, was created by the currently inactive Fyriplaka volcano which erupted 90,000 years ago. In fact, the biggest part of Milos was formed by volcanic activity. But only at Kalamos we may get a complete view of a crater.

Many alternative routes lead there. We have selected the western end of Agia Kyriaki beach as start and end point of our tour. When we reach the sea we turn right and take the path parallel to the sandy beach. Walking down for a few meters we find the starting point to our right. A wooden sign marks the trail-head.

The path, fairly easy to follow, has an intense uphill towards the northwest. We will walk through the external slope of the Fyriplaka volcanic cone. Thousands of years ago the volcano accumulated layers of cinder and ash on its slopes. The wind and the water together curved long vertical gullies on the hardened lava - some look like they have been cut with a razor. Impressive natural sculptures!

We go up this sandy, creviced area to reach a plateau. Following the sign we make a left and keep going up to reach the upland edge of the volcanic cone facing the sea. The crater is to our right, its largest part now cultivated. On the left we see the presently inactive kaolin mine that was operated up until the beginning of the 1970’s. At the next sign, the road splits and we turn left into a dirt road. In just a few meters we witness the steam emitting from fumaroles. Simply overwhelming!

We go back to the junction sign and make a left towards the top of the mountain, above the mine. The scenery unfolding from the peak is truly breathtaking! A panorama of the island to the north, the deep blue of the Aegean to the south. Heart-stopping reward after an exciting hike… On the way back we follow exactly the same route, much easier this time, as we walk down to the magnificent beach of Agia Kyriaki for a refreshing swim!

MILOS ROUTE #7
"Pirate Route (Kleftiko)"
An alternate path to Kleftiko ..

DETAILS
Platoraches - Katsipardos Foothills - Kleftiko
Length: 2.5 Km
Estimated Time: 1 h
Maximum Elevation: 180 m
Level of Difficulty: 3

DESCRIPTION
At Kleftiko, the enormous cliffs are standing there, immovable guards of the sea which tears them apart creating enchanting caves. The sea is magical; it seems like it’s grabbing all the colors of the sky to give them to its lovers as a gift.

We usually get there by sea. It’s a wonderful picturesque journey no one should miss. But this isn’t the only way to get there.

You can also go by land. This route is different. All dressed in green, covered with shrubbery - especially the evergreen Phoenicean Juniper which dominates. Lovely, like the one by boat, the eye travels to never-ending views. The curved lines of the landscape extend as far as the eye goes.

A steep gorge rips the slopes, reaching downhill to Kleftiko. The sea spreads endlessly to the south. You surrender and devote yourself to this scenery. An alternate path you shouldn’t miss either. As you start your way from the monastery of Ag. Yiannis, go uphill on the dirt road towards Gerondas, come down a little until you reach the lowest point (Platoraches) and park on the wooden sign.

The path unfolds on the flat slopes (Poundes) that descend to the sea. It is an easy, passable and well marked trail by the “Club of Mountain and Sea friends of Milos” that does not require more than an hour especially going downhill.

So, stroll down to Kleftiko following this path. It will be an unforgettable experience. A confirmation that Milos is worth visiting for its trails as well.

Trekking Milos Scenic Trails
Route M-1: "Adamas Secrets"

One very interesting and pleasant route begins from the beach of Lagada, located at the western part of the settlement of Adamas, The route follows the old dirt road and connects together some very important natural and geological elements of the large volcanic history of Milos.

Only about 200 meters from Lagada, you may see some bizarre black rocks at the artificial slopes of the dirt road. These are obsidian rocks within the lavas that feature the hill of Bombarda. Milos was thriving in prehistoric era, when its inhabitants used to gauge and then to trade this peculiar volcanic rock, since it was used in a variety of ways, including hunting and house activities. Adamas Obsidian, as we have named these outcrops, is a very significant spot since you may touch them and study them just in front of your eyes. Please make sure that you will not extract any rocks from their natural position.

Approximately 600 meters from the obsidian, you will see the French Military Cemetery, a WWII remnant. After that, the small but significant Adamas Wetland begins. This is actually a small lagoon in immediate contact with the sea and it is an environmentally protected area.

Most people ignore a hidden treasure at the very end of the dirt road, since they pause walking before reaching there. But we strongly recommend visiting this spot. It is the Adamas Fumarole, a natural cove at the foothills of Bombarda, where you may observe volcanic gas emissions. Smoke comes out of the cove, the temperature is remarkably higher and a characteristic smell of Sulphur is all round the cove. Make sure you do not get too close and not to distract any minerals you may see there.

In case you select to run this route at the early evening, you may get close to the lighthouse and admire the sunset from there, but in that case make sure you have carried some light in order to return safely to Adamas. ;)

Route Length - one way: 0.8km | Estimated Time - one way: 30'
Max Height: 16m | Difficulty Level: 1 (5 is highest)
