Four Seasons Ithaca

Greece is famous all over the world for its unique sunlight, sea and islands – the Greek summer. Turquoise waters, bright sun, crystal clear beaches, tavernas and shops full of people … And yet, there is so much more.

Ithaca is a four seasons destination. Spring in this island is an enchanting tapestry of wild flowers and herbs. In autumn, the sea is warm and the light creates a tranquil landscape. In winter the sun warms up the landscapes even on the frostiest days, so hiking is a tempting option. Experience the sensation of walking some of the most scenic trails through archaeological sites, enjoying breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and end up resting by the fireplace at the charming café in Anogi village.

If you’d like to discover the real Ithaca and its lifestyle, winter is the season for you. The heat and rush of summer are gone. Take a glimpse into the real everyday life when farming is mostly finished as well as olive and grape harvesting, citrus pruning and sowing. Navigate landscapes, visit settlements, see the traditional architecture and find out the plants and herbs of Ithaca.

Winter in Ithaca can be unpredictable. When bad weather strikes, we get to realize the life of natives in the past and the difficulties they had to overcome; when they had to travel long distances with children and their elderly parents, when farmers had to deal with fierce winds, sudden rainfalls or storms. Hiking the trails in winter would take us back in time as we retrace old footpaths, through farming landscapes where farmers spent their day struggling to make ends meet; Through olive groves and terraced fields of wheat, threshers, windmills, old livestock enclosures, traditional water storage tanks, half empty water wells and caverns, dry stone walls and gravel farming paths made to last forever… Take a look at the 3 meters high and 30 meters wide dry stone walls in Exogi village which were made for the purpose of effectively farming just one or two rows of vines. See how in Anogi village people used to pile one or two stones in order to cultivate even the smallest piece of land between rocks. Winter in Ithaca is the ideal period to find out more about the life of farmers in the past.

Landscapes like the village Anogi at the top of Niritos Mountain, Virgin Mary in Skala with the magnificent view of the gulf of Aphales, the crest of Viggla with massive rocks and giant olives and the 270° view to the Ionian Sea from the plateau of Marathia are spectacular; a scenery in winter to take your breath away.
