Tinos- Cyclades, Greece

Tinos is one of those sleeper hit islands. It’s known widely for its Greek Orthodox pilgrimage site: the Church of the Annunciation, in the port and main town, Hora.

But as soon as you leave the throngs in town, Tinos is a wonderland of natural beauty, dotted with more than 40 marble-ornamented villages found in hidden bays, on terraced hillsides and atop misty mountains. Also scattered across the brindled countryside are countless ornate dovecotes, a legacy of the Venetians.

There’s a strong artistic tradition on Tinos, especially for marble sculpting, as in the sculptors’ village of Pyrgos in the north, near the marble quarries. The food, made from local produce (cheeses, sausage, tomatoes and wild artichokes), is some of the best you’ll find in Greece.

🦀 Στη χερσόνησο της Σιθωνίας (το 2ο πόδι της Χαλκιδικής), στην ανατολική πλευρά, εκτείνεται ένα σύμπλεγμα από παραλίες, γνωστές ως Καβουρότρυπες με θέα στον επιβλητικό Άθω.

🦀 Είναι μικροί κολπίσκοι με λευκή άμμο, λευκά βράχια και τιρκουάζ νέρα, κρύμμενοι πίσω από ένα πυκνό πευκόδασος. Χρωματικός συνδυασμός που ικανοποιεί και το πιο στριφνό γούστο. Αν σας φαίνεται υπερβολικό το κλισέ "Σαν τη Χαλκιδική δεν έχει", οι Καβουρότρυπες θα σας σπείρουν το ζιζάνιο της αμφιβολίας.

🦀 Παλαιότερα, οι Καβουρότρυπες ήταν ελάχιστα γνωστές, μόνο στους ντόπιους ή σε αυτούς τους πεισματάρηδες που είχαν θέσει σκοπό ζωής να εξερευνήσουν κάθε σπιθαμή της Χαλκιδικής.

🦀 Ήταν μάλιστα σαν ένα κοινό μυστικό, ένα μαγευτικό καταφύγιο που το ήξεραν μόνο λίγοι. Γι’ αυτό εξάλλου, στον κεντρικό δρόμο δεν τοποθετήθηκε ποτέ πινακίδα που να σηματοδοτεί τη διαδρομή για αυτές τις παραλίες.

🦀 Σήμερα τα πράγματα έχουν ΣΑΦΩΣ αλλάξει. Παρολαυτά εξακολουθεί να απουσιάζει εκτεταμένη τουριστική οργάνωση. Εκτός απ' τα μπιτς μπαρ στην παραλία Πορτοκάλι και την διπλανή παραλία υπάρχουν μερικές ακόμα καντίνες με θέα και κάποιες ανθρώπινες παρεμβάσεις καλλιτεχνικής φύσεως στα βράχια. Σε οφ σίζον, είναι ακόμα πιθανόν να έχετε έναν ολόκληρο κολπίσκο για πάρτη σας.

⚠️ Δεν ξεχνάμε: Φεύγοντας παίρνουμε μαζί μας και όσα φέραμε και αν υπάρχει καλή διάθεση μαζεύουμε και κανένα ξεχασμένο σκουπιδάκι.

Jordan Petra, the ancient Nabataean city locked in the heart of Jordan’s sandstone escarpments, is the jewel in the crown of the country’s many antiquities.
The Ancient City is approached through the 1.2km-long, high-walled Siq – a crack in the rock, torn apart by tectonic forces. Just as you start to think there’s no end to the Siq, you catch breathtaking glimpses ahead of the most impressive of Petra’s sights, the Treasury, known locally as Al Khazneh. Carved out of iron-laden sandstone to serve as a tomb, the Treasury gets its name from the misguided local belief that an Egyptian pharaoh hid his treasure in the top urn. The Greek-style pillars, alcoves and plinths are truly masterpieces of masonry work.

With sites flung over a vast rocky landscape and a mood that changes with the shifting light of dawn and dusk, this is a highlight that rewards a longer visit.
