Festival of the Holy Virgin

The 15th of August is a significant day for the Greek Orthodox Church and the people of Greece, celebrating the Dormition of the Virgin or the Assumption of Mary. This day is filled with joy and celebration, honoring the belief that the Mother of Christ did not die but ascended to Heaven.

14th August - Night Mass on Panagia Island
On the night of the 14th, a special mass occurs on the Island of Panagia. You can take a boat from the main square to attend this beautiful event for a small fare. Many people go to light a candle, while others choose to attend the entire liturgy. It's a captivating sight to see people following the path from the dock to the monastery at the top, holding candles and creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. After the mass, the local bars come alive with joyous celebrations, reflecting the community's festive spirit.

15th August - Early Morning Mass and Traditional Soup
On the day of the Assumption, an early morning mass takes place before sunrise. Visitors come to the old monastery throughout the day to partake in a unique tradition. Volunteers cook a delicious beef broth with potatoes and carrots, known as "kantareli" soup, which is distributed to anyone who visits. The preparation begins the night before to ensure everything is ready by morning. Locals often add a lemon from their gardens to enhance the flavor of the soup. If you are on the island, you must visit and try this special dish.
