⛪ Did you know? ⛪

The Church of Ypapanti in Lakka, built in 1601, is the only two-domed church in the Ionian Islands! According to local legend, it was constructed over the underground cave of Hypapante, where a miraculous icon was hidden in one of the four wells beneath the church. 🙏✨

The bell tower, completed in 1772, features four Russian-origin bells, and the stunning marble iconostasis was added in 1909. Every Easter, the silver icon of Ypapanti makes a sacred journey through the villages of Paxos, connecting tradition and faith. 🕊️

💧 Did you know? 💧

Beneath the Church of the Holy Apostles in Boikatika Magazia lies the historic spring and cistern of Erimitis, an essential freshwater source for centuries. The square reservoir, with its two large arches, has been carefully maintained since 1852. During the French occupation in 1807, anyone polluting the water faced a fine of ten talers! 💧✨

Nearby, you can also find the ruins of another reservoir, "Makilla," built by Scottish engineer Mac Killan, adding another layer to Paxos’s rich history. 🌿

🏫 Did you know? 🏫

The former Lakka Primary School, built in 1906, is an architectural treasure funded by Andreas Syngron, thanks to a recommendation from Paxos-born Minister of Education, Theodoros Vellianitis. With its neoclassical design—featuring symmetrical windows, cornices, and a grand entrance with stone columns and a triangular pediment—it remains a stunning landmark in Lakka.

Today, it's home to the Paxos Nautical Athletic Club, continuing to serve the community in new ways. 🌊✨

🌿 Did you know? 🌿

The Stavrakis Anemogiannis Mill, built in 1820 in Loggos, was once a vital part of Paxos' life, grinding 1.5-2 kg of grain per hour! This round stone windmill featured a rotating wooden roof and large sails held together by ropes. The upper level housed sacks of grain and the double mill hopper that fed the grain to the millstone below. Although it stopped operating in the early 20th century, its ruins still stand, offering stunning views and a glimpse into the island’s self-sufficient past. 🌾
