The best beaches….aren’t always the most famous ones!

A little piece of Crete as it was in the 60s and 70s - but with electricity and hot water.

A tiny secluded bay and literally perched at the water’s edge, you can enjoy superb meals of freshly caught and perfectly cooked fish and local wine.

Perfect for those whose idea of nightlife is counting the stars and enjoy the sound of the sea.

Surrounded by water on three sides, Agios Nikolaos combines the sleepy feel of a seaside resort with all the amenities of a cosmopolitan port.

According to the mythology, the goddess Athena used to take her bath in this lake!

Kourtaliotiko gorge is 22 kilometers south of Rethymnon, in Crete. You can easily access this canyon by road, leave your cars in the designated parking area, and descend into the gorge. The three-kilometer-long canyon starts from the valley near the village of Koxare, and runs between the mountains Kouroupa and Koules.
The two sides of the gorge reach up to six hundred meters, leaving you breathless in front of this natural wonder. On the bottom of those cliffs lies the Kourtaliotiko River, which crosses the gorge and flows into the palm forest of Preveli.

, the largest Greek island, is home to several famous caves that are steeped in history and mythology. Here are some of the most notable ones:

1. **Dikteon Cave (Dikteon Andron)**: Located on the Lassithi Plateau in eastern Crete, Dikteon Cave is associated with Greek mythology as the birthplace of Zeus, the king of the gods. Visitors can explore the cave’s impressive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the small chapel dedicated to Zeus.

2. **Ideon Cave (Ideon Andron)**: Situated on Mount Ida, the highest mountain in Crete, Ideon Cave is also linked to Greek mythology as the legendary birthplace of Zeus. It’s a popular destination for hikers and those interested in history and mythology.

3. **Sfendoni Cave**: Located near the village of Zoniana in central Crete, Sfendoni Cave is known for its stunning formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Guided tours allow visitors to explore the cave’s chambers and learn about its geological features.

4. **Matala Caves**: Situated on the southern coast of Crete, near the village of Matala, these caves were once used as tombs in ancient times. In the 1960s and 1970s, they gained fame as a hippie hangout, with visitors including musicians and celebrities.

Visiting the Katholikon Monastery in Chania is a must for travelers interested in history, architecture, and spirituality.

You can’t miss the path to Katholiko Monastery because it is right through the gate at the end of the side walk at Gouverneto Monastery. The view is spectacular, you can see the Aegean Sea from the trailhead!

After walking along the path for about 600 meters there is the small church of Ipapanti. Next to it is the cave of Panagia Arkoudiotissa, in the centre of which there is a stalagmite in the form of a stooping bear. A legend says that the Virgin Mary turned the bear into rock as it was drinking the water of the monks. The cave has been used as a place of worship for many centuries, as there have been found inscriptions dedicated to the god Apollo and the goddess Artemis. Approximately in the middle of the path you will find the abandoned monastery of Saint John the Hermit that dates from the 17th century and is popularly known as Katholiko. Next to the monastery is the cave, where Saint John the Hermit lived in asceticism. The cave is about 100 m deep and you should have a flashlight if you are planning to explore it.
The pathway continues across Avlaki Gorge, where there are many caves in the slopes that have been used as shelters by hermit monks in the past. After about 15 minutes you will reach a small fjord with turquoise waters. Next to the sea you will find the remains of the old quarry of the monastery, as well as a small abandoned port. The return is sharply uphill and requires either good physical condition or enough patience and plenty of resting stops. You should also bring along enough water, especially during summer months.
