Good morning from windy Messonghi

Angelokastro (Castle of Angels) is a Byzantine castle and it is located on the north west coast near Paleokastritsa. It stands 305m above the sea. The castle never fell despite frequent sieges and attempts at conquering throughout the centuries. It played a decisive role in defending the island against pirate incursions and during three sieges of Corfu by the ottomans. During invasions the castle sheltered the local peasant population. It was built beginning of the 12th century by Duke Michael Komnenos.
