Loutro, a picturesque village located on the west side of the bay, was once the site of the ancient city of Phoenix (Finikas). In ancient times, it served as a bustling port town for the nearby city of Anopolis and played a significant role as a harbor in both Hellenistic and Roman eras. Its strategic location made it a preferred winter port for the town of Sfakia due to its natural protection during harsh weather conditions. Although the ancient city of Phoenix has long disappeared, its name lives on through the small village that exists in the bay of Loutro.
Throughout history, Loutro faced threats from Saracen pirates who used it as a base to attack ships sailing south of Crete. The Venetians successfully drove out these pirates and left behind remnants of a small fortress that can still be seen today. Additionally, another well-preserved fortress in Loutro stands as evidence of the Turkish presence in the area.

This custom dates back to ancient Greece and symbolizes the arrival of spring and the hope for good days ahead. Martakia are worn on wrists to ward off evil and illness, and at the end of the month, they are hung on branches for swallows to use in building nests.
