Winter Shades at the Acropolis 💛 🤍
In Winter the sun stays low which makes beautiful light for pictures.
Columns of the Parthenon. Yellow parts are originals dating to the 5th century B.C.E. White parts are new marble but are coming from the same quarry as they used in the past. After many years these new parts will age in the same way and the complete temple should be just one yellowish color. 💛

Athens Authentic Marathon🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏼‍♂️
Preparing for the 40th edition of the Athens Marathon the Authentic on Sunday, November 12.
In 490 B.C.E. the Persians fought against the Greeks in the battle of Marathon. The Greeks were outnumbered but won the battle. To send the good news to Athens, a messenger ran from the battlefield in Marathon to Athens. In Athens he said the legendary words "we won" and dropped dead. To honor the messenger Phidippides, the Marathon run came into being.
Nowadays the Marathon run is a worldwide event. But if you wanna do the authentic, original Marathon, you have to come to Attica the second Sunday in November.
This year November 12! Are you running this year?
Good luck to everyone!

Afternoon at the Acropolis 🌇
Every morning at sunrise and every afternoon at sunset, Greek soldiers come to raise and put down the Greek flag 🇬🇷 at the Acropolis. For the early birds, be there at 8:00, or stay until the Acropolis closes.
In Summer 🌞 the Acropolis is open from 8:00 - 20:00.
From September 1 the Acropolis is reducing its opening hours, according to sunset.
In Winter ❄️ the Acropolis is open from 8:00 - 17:00.

After the rain comes the sun 🌞
Remaining rainwater on the ruins at the Acropolis.
When it rains in Greece, it pours, it rains like cats and dogs. But usually just for a few hours and then the clouds break open and the sun comes through.
In ancient times Zeus was the father of all gods and humans. His symbol was the lightning bolt ⚡. So don't get Zeus mad or he will send a storm!

Venus - Aphrodite ❤️ in a gold bikini

Venus (Aphrodite), a great Goddess that embodies female beauty, femininity, vanity and eroticism. Her golden attire is harmoniously combined with the whiteness of the naked, marble flesh. A long cross-shaped chain connected to the brassiere's underside, falls towards the hips forming a star around the bellybutton and encircles her body.

Venus in a gold bikini, an unexpected visitor from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, will be displayed in the Acropolis Museum until 28 May 2023.

The Acropolis Museum celebrates is birthday on June 20!

On Monday 20/6, the Museum celebrates its birthday 🎂 with a new exhibition program in the Parthenon Gallery, reduced tickets (5€) and a music event.

The Museum will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with reduced tickets (5€) and at 3 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy music by the Woodwind Quintet of the Athens State Orchestra.

On the same day, will start the new exhibition program “Των Αθήνηθεν άθλων. Panathenaic amphorae from Toronto, Canada back to their birthplace”, with two exquisite vessels created in Athens over 2,500 years ago. They are Panathenaic amphorae, vessels filled with oil that were given as a prize to the victors of contests held during the festival of the Great Panathenaia. The two vessels from the Royal Ontario Museum will be exhibited in the Parthenon Gallery, relating this way with the great temple’s frieze, where Pheidias and his collaborators artfully carved the Panathenaic procession.

Reconstruction of the ancient theater of Delphi 🏛

The word “theatre” derives from the Greek “theatron”, which means “a place of seeing.” Large semi – circular, open air structures with their excellent acoustics are visible today at many archaeological sites. An excellent paradigm is the theatre of Delphi, located in the north – west corner of the sanctuary of Pythian Apollo.

It is the largest building of the archaeological site, initially built by Parnassus limestone. Constructed on 4th c. B.C. and restored, according to inscriptions, on 160/159 B.C., it was funded by Eumenes II, king of Pergamon. Later on, in 67 B.C a platform with relief sculptures depicting scenes from the life of Hercules, was added. The stage, of which only the foundations remain, was probably divided into the proscenium and the stage proper. The theatre had a total capacity of 4,200-4,500 spectators placed on 35 rows of seats.

It is possible, according to historians, that during the early years of the theatre the spectators sat directly at the ground or on wooden seats. Besides all the reconstruction works that the theatre suffers throughout the years, it has kept its basic structures: the stone seats, a round stage and an orchestra. The monument acquired both a spiritual and artistic value mainly because of its reputation due to the vocal and instrumental music games, part of famous "Pythian Games. For that reason, during antiquity, the reputation of the theatre was the same with the ancient stadium in Ancient Olympia. Today it hosts ancient plays and other cultural events, mostly during summer.
