Whitewashed walls became common in the early 20th century in the Cyclades. Limewash reflected sunlight, keeping the interiors cool during the hot summer months and acting as a natural disinfectant.
The thick stone walls added another layer of insulation, keeping homes comfortable both in summer and winter.
Blue doors and shutters became a key feature, often painted with copper sulfate-based pigments. Many locals believed the color protected against evil spirits or symbolized a connection to the sea.🧿
The government later encouraged the widespread use of blue and white to create a unified look across the islands.
These homes were built with a deep understanding of the environment. The choice of materials and design created practical, long-lasting homes that remain beautiful and functional today.
