It was good to be back at Pamakanya after an 18 month hiatus. The lake looks great and the community is resilient in the face of the pandemic. Los cuatros duenos kept busy this week with some maintenance projects and r&r and lots of Ixoq business for Katie and Becky.

There is a very cool exhibition of Guatemalan art in far-away Santa Barbara but I did enjoy this accompanying graphichttps://www.mcasantabarbara.org/mcasbv3/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Print-mca-map-final-01WEB.pdf

Maya Weave Their Identity Into Their Soccer Team

Cool article - Xejuyup is west of Lake Atitlan. Men in many towns around the lake wear traditional clothing but the greatest display is during Semana Santa in Santiago. I have a wool sweater from Solola made in 1989 that I am sure took somebody a couple of months to make and should be in a museum somewhere.

C.S.D. Xejuyup of Guatemala incorporates traditional clothing into its uniforms, a decision that echoes its founder’s desire to have his team reflect its community.

Aspirational birding...

https://www.cayaya-birding.com/cbc/atitlan2016.htm.

The Audubon bird count went to Reserva Natural Privada Los Tarrales, Finca San Jerónimo Miramar, in the municipal forest of Santiago Atitlán near Mirador Rey Tepepul, and in the bay of Santiago Atitlán of Lake Atitlán.

These are all reasonably accessible, but knowing nothing about bird habitat leads me to believe i can find these at Pamakanya.

My proposal for an incrementalist birding strategy: With coffee and journal in hand, sit on the Lido deck of the main house. Up a notch: Pre-dawn hike up the dry creek bed between Pamakanya and Jaibalito. Higher still: ASOANTUR tour on the slopes of Volcan Atitlan. 11: Tour with www.cayaya-birding.com

Check out the amazing drone footage of a Volcan de Fuego eruption at www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-39571147. and here's the same volcano as viewed from the vantage point of the front porch of Pamakanya, nearly 30 miles away! Do you prefer your volcanoes closer, but quieter? If so, you are in luck. We have 4 within 10 miles...Cerro de Oro, San Pedro, San Lucas, and Atitlan. The first two are climbable for everybody...the other two are a hike and a half, and all are mostly-dormant since the lake was formed by a huge volcanic eruption about 1.8 million years ago.

In three weeks we will be at Casa Pamakanya! In the meantime I have to comfort my soul with photographs.

Looking forward to our own trip to Pamakanya in less than a month, flights to Guate from DC have been in the mid-$400's roundtrip for quite a while now, even for Easter week. The Semana Santa processions in the towns of Santiago and San Juan la Laguna are phenomenal, unforgettable, bookings available! https://www.vrbo.com/70598 #

The Best New Reason to Visit Guatemala

Even more intriguing reasons to visit Guate ... it's thriving art scene in Guatemala City.

At this very moment, Guatemala’s past and present are on a collision course. And it’s about time.

This past spring a lovely couple from California chose Pamakanya as the venue for their sunrise wedding. What a special treat that they began their married life together in our gardens! And the amazing photos are by local photographers Daniel & Melissa www.facebook.com/lopezperezphoto

"Good-bye My Love!" Guatemalan kids would use this phrase to strike up a conversation in the 80s. What is today’s equivalent come-on? My favorite response to broken English is ... broken dialect! Join in! The local dialect near Pamakanya, and all along the North Shore of Lake Atitlan is called Kaqchikel, while the South Shore communities speak Tzutujil. Kaqchickel and Tzutujil are only two of the 21 Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. Over 6 million people speak Mayan. Want to join in? This vocabulary (from Baldomero Cuma Chavez) should help get you started.
