The U.S. Department of State protects U.S. border security and the facilitation of legitimate travel to the United States. Under U.S. law, the authority to issue or deny a U.S. visa rests solely with consular officers at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Whenever an individual applies for a U.S. visa, a consular officer reviews the facts of the case and determines whether the applicant is eligible for that visa based on U.S. law. All visa applications are adjudicated on a case-by-case basis.
