Countryside Adventure Tours

Countryside Adventure Tours Are you done with the hustle and bustle of the city? Finished with your shopping? Take a look at the Hong Kong has a great variety of landscapes.

Visit old Hakka villages, marvel at the views from the highest peaks, enjoy the roar of a waterfall, swim at a beautiful beach, learn about Hong Kong's unique geology or just have a relaxed stroll through the woods. And all with the convenience of a private tour guide to show you the best of the best. From the barren wastelands of the Castle Peak range near Tuen Mun to the lush forests of the Tai

Po Kau nature reserve, and open grasslands on the slopes of Tai Mo Shan. High mountains provide fantastic vistas over both the countryside and the urban areas. Waterfalls can be found roaring down the steep mountain slopes. Scattered throughout these beautiful natural settings you can find many culturally and historically interesting sites such as authentic Hakka villages, where time seemingly has stood still for the past century, and secluded monasteries. The Global Geopark of Hong Kong offers interesting sights, showcasing the remarkably rich and unique geology of Hong Kong and giving insight in how a violent volcanic past gave the place the shape it has today. The territory used to be a major strategic asset of the British military. Ruins of military sites are all over the place, including gun placements, pillboxes, and even complete tunnel networks and large underground rooms that are still intact and accessible. The only time these defences have seen action was during the Japanese invasion in 1941, in which the British troops were quickly overrun. Very little damage was done to these installations.

Sunday – 10 September – Ninepin Islands tour (season finale!).

Join us on this exciting speed boat tour to some of the most rugged, remote and hard to reach islands of Hong Kong: the Ninepin Group. Hot and quiet weather predicted for this weekend, perfect for a visit to this place.

Never inhabited, the only signs of civilisation here are a small light house on North Ninepin and Hong Kong’s smallest Tin Hau temple on North Ninepin. These rocky wind- and waveswept outcrops are also part of the Hong Kong geopark, here is where the hexagonal rock columns are at their largest. On this tour we will land on both these islands, where you can see various rock formations including the Moon Cliff and the Cannon Rock, sea arches and steep cliffs.

Due to the winds, it is only possible to go here in summer, when the winds are light. Most of the year the waves are too big for small boats, so this is the last schedule for this summer. Miss it and you have to wait until June next year.

Departure: 11:00 from Sai Kung Pier, return there about 15:00.
For more info and booking: http://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-ninepins.shtml
Fee: HKD 450 per person.

06/09/2016

A great tour, fantastic end to the season. Good weather, medium waves (big enough for some good excitement), and great weather. No rain, not too hot - just lovely.

Looking forward to the 2017 Ninepin Islands season!

06/09/2016

Fish, fish and more fish this time! Lots of fish, and I've been focussing my lens on many of them. Here a little selection.

Oh and the last one of course are not fish, but it was just too funny not to post it as well.

Sunday, 25 September: Hexagonal Columns, Caves and Arches.

Join us to some of the best kept secrets (and some very well known bits) of the Hong Kong Geopark - the Sai Kung volcanic rock region.

See the famous curved hexagonal columns and the sea cave at High Island East Dam, walk into a sea arch (only possible at low tide), marvel at the white sands of Pak Lap beach, and enjoy a seafood lunch at a waterfront restaurant.

In the afternoon we'll have a relaxing sampan ride via Jin Island and a stop at Sharp Island back to Sai Kung. At Sharp Island we'll check out the various rocks including the peculiar pineapple bun rocks, and walk over the tombolo - a natural land bridge.

On the way you'll also learn how the landscape all came to be - and how it started with a bang. The very, very big bang of an exploding super volcano.

Start: 9:00 at University MTR station.
Finish: 17:00 at Sai Kung.
Cost: HKD 290/person (children under 12: HKD 250), including transport from University to East Dam and sampan to Sai Kung; excluding lunch (normally about $120 per person).
Book your spots now: https://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-sha_kiu.shtml

Friday - 16 September - Mid Autumn holiday: Double Haven Islands Tour.

The other half of the Hong Kong Geopark is often forgotten about. Located in and around the unspoilt and hard to access waters of Double Haven, it is a place of sheer beauty and also really special geology: particularly the fiery red rocks that are so well exposed in places like Port Island, Hung Shek Mun and Ap Chau.

Besides those places, we'll also visit the famous Devil's Fist at Wong Chuk Kok Tsui, well preserved Hakka village Lai Chi Wo and fishing island Kat O. On the way you'll get to see the beautiful surroundings of the flowing hills and all the little islands of Double Haven.

This is a full day tour by speed boat, which allows us not to only see the places from the water, but actually to land and set foot on them!

Start: 9:00 at University MTR (walk to Ma Liu Shui pier to board the boat).
Finish: 17:20 at Tap Mun for a ferry back to Ma Liu Shui (about 18:45 there) or 17:30 at Wong Shek for a bus to Sai Kung.
Cost: HKD 430 per person.

Book now: https://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-double_haven.shtml

Too bad the season for visiting this awesome place is just too short! Thanks all for joining, great group you were, and hope to see you again some other time.

Saturday afternoon, 3 Sept: Ninepin Islands visit (season finale!).

Rugged, windswept, inhospitable. The Ninepin Islands are the last pieces of land fishermen see when they sail from Hong Kong into South China Sea. Some will make a quick stop at South Ninepin to visit the Tin Hau temple and ask for a safe journey, but other than that the islands are deserted.

These rocky outcrops are known for their unique geology and outstanding natural beauty. Only accessible in summer when the winds are favourable, there is not much opportunity to visit this interesting place.

Join us for a speed boat ride through the geopark to visit these islands. Explore them on foot, and see the huge hexagonal rock columns, cliffs and sea arches up close and personal. Total tour takes about four hours, of which at least two hours on North and South Ninepin.

Note that this is the last schedule for this year! In September the winds change, and the waters around the Ninepin Islands become too rough for safe travel and landing. If you miss this one, you'll have to wait until June next year – the next Ninepin season.

Fee HKD 390/person. For more details and bookings: https://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-ninepins.shtml

Sunday, 28 August: Hexagonal Columns, Caves and Arches.

Just too good a walk to not do for too long a time, especially in summer with the ultimate low tides which are just perfect for this trip!

Put on a big hat, lather up in sunscreen, pack an extra bottle of water and join us for this wonderful tour of the Hong Kong Geopark, showing you some of the best of the best: the best of the best known, and the best of the best hidden gems!

Start: 9:00 at University MTR station (East Rail Line).
Finish: 17:00 at Sai Kung town.
Fee: HKD 290/person; including taxi from University MTR to East Dam and sampan from Sha Kiu to Sai Kung. Excluding lunch.
For more info and booking: https://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-sha_kiu.shtml

We start at the great curved hexagonal columns and the sea cave near High Island East Dam. One of the best known spots of the Hong Kong Geopark, this characteristic exposure of the hexagonal columns shows a lot of geological history in just one place.

From there on to the village of Pak Lap with its beautiful sandy beach, from where we take the trail over the hills to one awesome hidden gem: Mok Min Cave. One of Hong Kong's many sea arches, this one is fully accessible at low tide. A bit of scrambling down the rocks is needed but the reward is great.

Then on to Sha Kiu for lunch at Yau Ley seafood restaurant, and waiting for a traditional wooden sampan to pick us up for the very relaxed second part of the trip. We go to see the shoreline and the great arch of Jin Island and make a stop at Sharp Island, another geopark site, for a stroll along the beach and onto the tombolo - the natural landbridge - where also the peculiar pineapple bun rocks are found.

Led by experienced geopark guide, this tour will not only show you the sights but also let you know how it all came to be over the past 140 million years.

Start: 9:00 at University MTR station (East Rail Line).
Finish: 17:00 at Sai Kung town.
Fee: HKD 290/person; including taxi from University MTR to East Dam and sampan from Sha Kiu to Sai Kung. Excluding lunch.

Sunday, 31 July: Sharp Island snorkelling.

Best known as a geopark site, Sharp Island is also home to many different species of hard coral. This includes a large area of seabed covered with cactus corals, their sheet like structures expand as far as you can see.

Besides corals, there are always lots of fish swimming around in these shallow waters. Large schools of small fry, using the shallows as protection from larger predators, and a great range of other fish. Watch crabs as they pick through the dirt looking for edibles, sea cucumbers vacuuming the sea floor, and the beautiful but also somewhat scary looking sea urchins.

Start: 11:00 from Sai Kung New Pier (meeting time: 10:45-11:00)
Finish: about 14:30 at Sai Kung.

It was unbearably hot today, but I don't think I've ever seen skies this blue! Super clear skies, even the colours of the ships on the horizon were visible.

And can you spot that rainbow, high in the sky? We saw two of them even!

All in all it was a fantastic morning out to the Ninepin Islands. Join us next time, 17 July!

21/06/2016

Saturday, 6 August (morning): Ninepin Islands visit.

Deserted as they are, this is also a place of great natural beauty and unique geology. It is where the hexagonal rock columns are at their largest, with diameters of more than two meters. There are sea arches, the moon cliff, and tall vertical cliffs.

The adventure is completed with an exhilarating speed boat ride from Sai Kung to these islands, making stops on the way at the various sights of the Ung Kong Group (sea arches and cliffs, and more hexagonal columns than you can possibly count).

Only available in summer due to the weather - these remote outcrops can only be reached when the winds are light.

More details: http://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-ninepins.shtml

Saturday, 02 July: Hoi Ha snorkelling

By popular request - snorkelling adventures in the weekends!

Please note: all participants must be able to swim 50 meters unaided. We'll start snorkelling from the kayak, so you must be confident to jump into deep water (you normally can't see the bottom). There are simple life jackets available on request.

Today it's a trip to Hoi Ha, known for its clear waters (earlier this season we had visibilities of 10-15 meters) and rich sea life. It is home to several large coral colonies with a great variety of corals, and also many different species of fish call it home. Other than that, look out for sea urchins (the spiky ones), sea cucumbers (look like sausages - the vacuum cleaners of the sea floor), crabs (the tanks of the underwater world), etc.

This trip includes kayaking to get to the main coral colony, we'll visit two different coral areas before returning to shore.

Start: 10:00 from University MTR station - take taxi from there to Hoi Ha (included).
In Hoi Ha: instruction on how to use the equipment (as necessary), get the kayaks, and get out on the water!
We'll be finished about 14:00 in Hoi Ha, from were we'll catch a minibus back to Sai Kung.

Fee: HKD 390, including snorkelling gear, kayak and taxi from University station to Hoi Ha.
For more info and booking, please visit http://www.adventuretours.hk/scheduled-hikes/tour-hoi_ha.shtml

Please note, there is a restaurant in Hoi Ha, but I can't recommend it. Better bring some snacks to bridge the time to better food.
