Being a geographer who recently resided in Phnom Penh, I found this interesting. The 1921 map hangs in the lobby of 240 Residence/Enso cafe in Phnom Penh, which is a very good restaurant by the way.

A new malaria vaccine shows better results than expected. This is good news, given that Malaria kills around 400,000 people every year. Two thirds of those who die are children under the age of five.

In a study, a new vaccine provides 77% protection against malaria. The vaccine can be mass-produced cheaply.

But it’s impossible to escape the legacy of disease, which is evident in the city’s culture, lifestyle and the very shape of its urban form. The Covid-19 pandemic is just the latest in a series of epidemics that have shaped Hong Kong. Malaria, influenza, cholera, the bubonic plague, SARS – all have left their mark on the city.

This site shows global COVID-19 vaccinations administered as a percentage of national populations.

On Jan 5, 2021, the five most successful vaccination campaigns belonged to Israel, Bahrain, Iceland, UK, and USA—in that order.

On that same date, Israel was miles ahead of everyone, having given first jabs to almost 16% of its population in as many days. It will be interesting to watch this develop.

Total number of vaccination doses administered per 100 people in the total population. This is counted as a single dose, and may not equal the total number of people vaccinated, depending on the specific dose regime (e.g. people receive multiple doses).

---- Bridging the Empathy Gap ----

Much of Educational Excursions' work is aimed at improving access to education for the disfranchised, while simultaneously helping privileged outsiders empathize with this alien condition. That's a tall order. For, when broad 'life-experience gaps' exist between groups, an 'Us and Them' dichotomy can emerge.

But, with the right instructional approach, such gaps can be narrowed. With well-placed scaffolding to support learning, unfamiliar situations can begin to make sense. And sometimes, the feelings of other people can be understood, or even shared. We've developed such a scaffold.
