Lantau Island's most Famous Hike: Lantau Peak(鳳凰山)

Route : Pak Kung Au(伯公坳) - Lantau Peak(鳳凰山) - Tsam Chai Au(斬柴坳) - Nyong Ping(昂坪)

Lantau Peak(鳳凰山) is the second highest peak in Hong Kong, where the highest belongs to Tai Mo Shan. With its altitude of 934 metres above sea level, one can have a nice view of the mountains that surrounds it, if the weather permits.

Most people starts their hike from Pak Kung Au(伯公坳), which is the highest point of Tung Chung Road, the road that connects Tung Chung to the south of Lantau. Pak Kung Au can be easily reached by bus from Tung Chung. At above 350 metres, the trail starts here towards Lantau Peak, 3.5km away. In other words, one has to ascend at least 600 metres in that 3.5 kilometers in order to reach the top. The scenery along the hike is beautiful, with views of the high mountains of Lantau, and at some points, Tung Chung town as well.

While the hike is not particularly difficult , it is definitely strenuous and requires a certain level of energy and experience, as 3000 steps of stairways begin right at the starting point, all the way until the peak. While there are a few smooth sections in between, and one can take a bit of rest during the climb. However, this hike is still guaranteed to be a tough one.

The view on top is beautiful, to say the least, and is a famous place for good photography, particularly during sunset and sunrise. But to have good weather is also a matter of chance, as it is hard to say being at this altitude. Nevertheless, many hikers see reaching the summit as an achievement in itself.

The hike downhill towards Nyong Ping, is equally challenging, as hiking down 500 meters towards Nyong Ping (at about 450 meters.), which is merely 1km away, is a sharp descend through thousands of stairways. However, the trail does ends here and one can enjoy a small snack before taking a bus back to Tung Chung town.

Sai Kung Hikes: Cheung Sheung Country Trail(嶂上郊遊徑)and Ngau Yee Shek Hill(牛耳石山)

Route : Hoi Ha Road(海下路) - Cheung Sheung Country Trail(嶂上郊遊徑) - Cheung Sheung(嶂上) - Maclehose Trail Sec. 3(麥徑3段) - Ngau Yee Shek Hill(牛耳石山) - Maclehose Trail Sec. 3(麥徑3段) - Pak Tam Au(北潭凹)

This famous hiking trail in Sai Kung West Country Park provides a rather easy and smooth ascend towards an important route Junction, which leads to many beautiful mountain peaks in Sai Kung. This Junction, named Cheung Sheung(嶂上) , is located in the center of Sai Kung West country park. From here, one can continue to many hills of Sai Kung, including Shek Uk Hill(石屋山) , Ngau Yee Shek Hill(牛耳石山), or through Maclehose Trail No. 3(麥徑3段) towards Kai Kung Hill(雞公山). Hence, many hikers consider this trail as a starting point for the many different hikes across Sai Kung West.

This time, I will introduce the hike to Ngau Yee Shek Hill(牛耳石山), via Cheung Sheung Country Trail(嶂上郊遊徑).

The trail starts from Hoi Ha Road(海下路), a short 25 minutes minibus ride from Sai Kung Centre. Get off a little while after the Junction from the road towards Wong Shek Pier(黃石碼頭) and Hoi Ha road. Ask the minibus driver to get you off at Cheung Sheung Country Trail(嶂上郊遊徑). The trail starts right here with a very gentle ascend towards Cheung Sheung, a merely 2.5km easy hike from the starting point at Hoi Ha road. Cheung Sheung is a nice piece of grassland located 300m above sea level, and is a resting point for any further destinations. Many cows make their habitat in this small piece of Grassland. There is even a small store there. The famous "Hui Lam Store"(許林士多), serves Tofu dessert(豆腐花), a sweet green bean soup(綠豆沙) as well as various snacks during weekends. Even during weekdays, they have various bottled drinks for sale. This store is runned by an old man, who bring the supplies by foot from down the hill.

After the rest, hikers can continue their walk to various hills across the area, and here is the hike to Ngau Yee Shek hill(牛耳石山), a further one hour walk uphill. From the resting place in Cheung Sheung, hike south along Maclehose Trail Sec. 3, and the trail began to ascend. Until a point where one can see the peak, there is short, narrow path amidst the bushes that will lead to the top, with a nice paranomic view across the Sai Kung peninsula can be seen. Layers of mountain ranges, beautiful coastlines and even small villages all appears in front of your eyes. It is surely one of the most beautiful view of Sai Kung you can find.

After the short stay at the peak, descend back through the narrow trail to Maclehose Trail Sec. 3, and soon a long stairways will sharply descend to Pak Tam Au(北潭凹). One will surely not regret having to hike up those stairways from the start, I am sure. Here the hike concludes, and one can catch a bus or a minibus back to Sai Kung town.

Ma On Shan Hikes: Nyong Ping Grassland(昂平草原)and Mau Ping Vine King(茅坪藤皇)

Route: Ma On Shan Village(馬鞍山村) - Maclehose Trail No. 4(麥徑4段) - Nyong Ping Grassland(昂平草原) - Mau Ping Vine King(茅坪藤皇) - Pak Kong(北港) - Hiram's Highway(西貢公路)

This could probably be one of the easiest hike in Ma On Shan, as it pass through two of the "must visit" of Ma On Shan Country Park, namely Nyong Ping Grassland, and Mau Ping Vine King. Nyong Ping Grassland is located in a high plateau, where it has a great paranomic view of the Sai Kung area, as well as its outlying islands. Many choose to fly parachute from here. On the other hand, Mau Ping is famous for its Vine King, which is a thick tree root growing slope up into the top of a small abandoned hut, surrounded by curly rattans deep into the thick forest.

The hike starts from Ma On Shan Village, next to the village where in the past is a mining area. Ma On Shan Village can be reached by a short taxi ride from Ma On Shan Mtr station, or a very infrequent minibus operates this route. The trail starts with ascending steps, until reaching a junction with the Maclehose Trail. Follow the Maclehose trail no. 4 and soon will reach the beautiful Nyong Ping Grassland. Go across the Grassland and soon one can see a great view of the Sai Kung area and the surrounding islands. This view, in my opinion is even more beautiful then the Thousand Islands Reservoir in Tai Lam Chung. Look towards the mountains, and one can see the Pyramid Hill(大金鐘), where climbing up is possible, but not for the inexperienced. The views of the surrounding mountains is simply amazing.

Upon leaving the Grassland, continue the route towards Mau Ping Junction, as the trail becomes more rocky and a little bit of caution is required to walk smoothly through. Soon we arrived at Mau Ping Junction(茅坪坳), and from here, the entrance to the Vine King is just straight from the junction, through a rather hidden entrance. The Vine King is very obvious, surrounded by many curly rattens, and has a very mysterious feel.

From here, follow the sign towards Pak Kong, it is a steep descend through a stony path. Make sure to hike carefully down the path, especially during the rainly days as the path can become very slippery. At the end of the stoney path is a paved path, and here appears a "bamboo tunnel", as bamboo sticks outgrown from the thick forest, providing a shelter over the path. The path ended in the village of Pak Kong, where within a short walk is the Hiram's Highway, where buses and minibuses are available back to the city.

Needle Hill(針山)

Route : Shing Mun Reservoir Pineapple Dam(城門水塘菠蘿壩) - Maclehose Trail Sec. 7(麥徑7段) - Needle Hill(針山) - Needle/Grass Hill Junction(針草坳) - Tao Fong Hill Lutheran Seminary(道風山信義宗神學院) - Shatin Mtr(沙田港鐵站)

This hiking route is popular for hikers who want to challenge their hiking abilities, as hiking up to Needle Hill, while not particularly dangerous, is strenuous and involved hiking up long stairs and rapid ascends. With its 2800 steps of stairways up to the top of Needle Hill, one can guarantee a tough climb. What make it more challenging is that the hike doesn't end here. After the climb downhill, there is still a 4-5km route before one can get to any transportation points. This makes this route one of the toughest hikes I have ever experienced.

The hike starts from the Pineapple Dam of Shing Mun Reservoir, a short minibus ride away from Tsuen Wan. From here, it is a 2km walk along a paved path, with beautiful views of the Reservoir as well as the Shing Mun Gorge. After passing the main dam, the route connects with Maclehose Trail Sec. 7, and the route starts to ascend. It is from here the steps up the hill seems to be endless. One can get a beautiful view of the Shing Mun Reservoir along the way, with the view more open up as the trail ascends. Before the final climb, there is a slight descend, which follows by a steep, stoney mountain path that leads to the top summit.

However, as mentioned, the hike does not end here. The first initial descend is not too tough, which follows by a paved road for 1km until the Needle Hill/Grass Hill Junction. From there it is the start of a long chains of stairways for approximately 3-4km, involving a few small ascends and descends. Finally. After the exhausting hike, the path reaches the Tao Feng Hill Lutheran Seminary, and that's another short hike before reaching Shatin Mtr station.

Northwest New Territories Hike: Thousand Island Lake (千島湖清景臺)(Tai Lam Chung Reservoir)

Route: Yuen Long Tai Tong(元朗大棠) - Maclehose Trail Sec. 10 (麥徑10段)- Thousand Island Viewing Pavilion(千島湖清景台) - Tai Lam Chung Reservoir Small Dam ( 大欖涌水塘小壩)- So Kwun Wat(掃管笏)

This hiking route has become tremendously popular since 2020, the start of Covid-19, when some travel magazines advertise this hiking route, showing pictures of a reservoir featuring many small islands in within. Since then, this has become Hong Kong's version of the popular "Thousand Islands" tourist destination. It is an easy hiking route, well worth the trip just for the Thousand Island viewing platform alone.

The hiking route starts from Tai Tong Country Park, a 20 minutes taxi ride from Yuen Long Mtr station, or a 30 minutes bus ride away. If taking the bus, one need to walk a further 2km from Tai Tong village to the start of the hike. From the starting point, the first 2km of the hike consist of a paved route. This section is especially popular during spring time, as beautiful scenery of a foliage(紅葉)appears in the trees along the route. The hike continues until a junction, follow the signs and turn right towards the end of the path.

Here, an ascending stairway started the hike into a mountain trail, with a few stairways here and there. Crossing a few small hills, a slight stairways mark the entrance to the Thousand Island Viewing Pavilion(千島湖清景台). Soon, the reservoir appears with clear sight of the Thousand Islands in within. Many tourists stand in awe in the viewing platform, busy taking pictures of the tremendous sight, and during the weekends it can be especially crowded. After the view, walk back the stairways and continue the mountain trail towards the end, where a paved, descending path start the sharp descend into the concerte dam of Tai Lam Chung reservoir. From there it is a short walk towards the village of So Kwun Wat, where a minibus will take you back to the Hong Kong Gold Coast or Tuen Mun city Centre.

Sai Kung Hikes: Tung Lung Yi Che(東龍二輋)

Route : Pak Tam Au(北潭凹) - Chek Keng(赤徑) - Tai Long Au(大浪坳) - Nam She Au(蚺蛇坳) - Tung Lung Tau Che(東龍頭輋) - Tung Lung Yi Che(東龍二輋) - Tung Lung Mei Che(東龍尾輋) - Tan Ka Wan(蛋家灣) - Ko Lau Wan(高流灣)

This is, perhaps, one of my favorite Hikes in Sai Kung, and although not a very popular route, the scenery along the route is stunning and way worth the effort. The hiking route is a bit challenging at point, but not too exhausting. That is what worth the fun.

This trail follows the mountain foot of one of the most famous peak, Nam She Tsim 蚺蛇尖 (Sharp Peak), and is the closest place to get a beautiful view of this mountain. If you have been to Rishiri Island of Hokkaido, Japan, the outlook and the texture of this mountain looks very familiar.

For the first part of this hike, start from Pak Tam Au, and follow the same route that leads to Chek Keng and Ham Tin Beach. The first part of the hike is easy, just follow a paved road all along. Until reaching the Tai Long Au junction, instead of descending into Ham Tin Beach, follow up the stairs till the entrance of the path to Nam She Tsim(蚺蛇尖) (Sharp Peak). Before long, paranomic views of the beaches can be seen. Soon there will be a warning sign for hikers who plan to hike up to the Sharp Peak. However, this route is not about hiking up there (so ignore the sign, haha) , and walk the other way up a small hill instead. After some ascends, the trail then goes sharply downhill, towards the bottom is a 6 pointed junction. Be sure to look for the junction that is straight across from where the path comes.

After the 6 pointed junction, the pathway become more narrow, and makes a slight ascend. Before long we reached Tung Lung Tau Che (the "head" of the Dragon). Here, the Sharp Peak appears in its majestic moment. The trail then follow the view of the mountain, and soon we reached Tung Lung Yi Che (the "middle" of the dragon), and not until long is Tung Lung Mei Che (which is the "tail" of the dragon) . Here is the view of the other side of the Peak as it reached the sea, with its rugged coastline clearly visible. The trail then make its descend, and after some winding turns it finally ended at a paved path, which make its way down to Tan Ka Wan(蛋家灣).

Tan Ka Wan is a catholic village with a drug rehabilitation centre. One can see a cross at one of the village house. From there, continue an easy walk and soon we reached the final point of the hike, at Ko Lau Wan(高流灣) village. Enjoy a bowl of cuttlefish ball noodles (or seafood meal during weekends) before heading back to Wong Shek Pier(黃石碼頭) by ferry or fast boat.

This hiking route is narrow and brushy at point, and may need a useful hiking app and a GPS to navigate through. However, the trail is still clearly visible, although it lacks in direction signs. It is quite a fun and exciting trail to hike in, especially for those who want to be more adventurous, but yet not too difficult.

Hong Kong Island Hike: Dragon's Back(龍脊)

Route: Collison Cape(哥連臣角) - Island Trail Sec. 8(港島徑8段)- Dragon's Back(龍脊) - Shek O Peak(打爛埕頂山)- To Tei Wan(土地灣)

This trail is one of the most famous hike in Hong Kong, especially for oversea tourists who want to get a taste of hiking here. It is near the city centre, and it also goes through one of the most beautiful area of Hong Kong Island, overlooking the southern district of Shek O, Tai Tam and Big Wave Bay.

The trail starts at Collison Cape, a short minibus ride from Shau Kei Wan Mtr station, which is the beginning of the Island Trail Section 8. The first part of the trail is a hiking path into the woods, without much open air scenery. After 2km, the trail reached a junction, and a stack of stairs begins to ascend, and here starts the beginning of the Dragon's Back trail. From there the scenery appears to become open up, with nice view of the landscape of Shek O and Big Wave Bay. Not until long, the trail continue to slightly ascend, reaching the highest point at Shek O Peak(打爛埕頂山), and from here it starts to descend, with a stack of stairs at the end of the trail that leads to the village of To Tei Wan, right next to Shek O road. From here, you can take a bus or minibus back to Shau Kei Wan station.

The trail is of entirely an unpaved mountain path. While not difficult to walk, there are a few slippery sections that needs to be careful. The trail can also be very windy at times. But nevertheless it is the most beautiful hiking trail in Hong Kong Island, and is definitely worth a hike.

Sai Kung's Outlying Islands: Tap Mun(Grass Island) (塔門)

Route: Wong Shek Pier(黃石碼頭) - Tap Mun Ferry Pier (by ferry) - Tap Mun Fisherman Village(塔門漁民新邨) - Tap Mun Grassland (大草坪)- Tap Mun Village - Tap Mun Ferry Pier - Wong Shek Pier

Tap Mun is simply one of my favorite Sai Kung's islands. The scenery is beautiful, the hiking path is nicely built and paved. It is very green, the food is exotic, etc...

Ferries run between Wong Shek Pier to Tap Mun once every two hours during weekdays, and more during weekend. Upon reaching the ferry pier, turn right and start the walk. Before long is a stairways that leads to a local church. Continue to walk, and soon we pass through Tap Mun's Fisherman Village, which is built by the government to accommodate fishermen in the past, and here is where the beautiful coastal trail begins. The trails goes along the coast, with scenery of the mountains of Northern Sai Kung appears in your eyes. This includes the beautiful mountain of Nam She Tsim (Sharp Peak), which looks incredibly picturesque when looked at from a distance.

Soon the trail makes a slight ascend through some steps, and many benches are built along the path for tourists to take a rest as they like. Along the coast are some beautiful coastal rocks, with two big rocks that stand on top of each other. Soon we reached the grassland, which unfortunately has eroded away due to massive camping in the area. When the grasses have re-grown, this will guarantee a beautiful area to be enjoyed. Many cows dotted the grassland area, and they are truly the original residents of the island.

There is a stairway north of the grassland that leads to an overlook Pavillion, but unfortunately it wasn't very scenic, as the views are blocked by the trees. The trail then continue west, and soon we reached the main village, where one can enjoy the local specialty of the island, like sea-urchin fried rice, cuttlefish balls, and drinks like salty lemon water, and its famous cold milk-tea! This ends the hike with its many stalls that sell local dried seafood, as they claim they are the best in Hong Kong!

Sai Kung Hike - Po Kwu Wan(曝罟灣)and Sheung Yiu Country Trail(上窰郊遊徑)

Route: Pak Tam Chung(北潭涌) - Hei Tsz Wan(起子灣) - Po Kwu Wan(曝罟灣) - High Island Reservoir West Dam(萬宜水庫西壩)

This hiking route in Sai Kung is interesting, as it goes through some historic Hakka villages, as well as crossing an ancient concrete dam that is broken in places, beneath a pristine harbour that is little discovered and remains transquil and quiet, a feeling that is out of the world.

The trail starts from Pak Tam Chung, just passed the entrance gate to the Sai Kung country park. The first part of the hiking trail is easy, a paved concrete path that pass through an ancient Kiln, as well as the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum, which is in a former Hakka village that is well preserved till today. Soon, you will reaches Hei Tsz Wan, an abandoned village near a water inlet that has its own small pier for boats. It is very scenic to have a few pictures taken here. After the short stay at the pier, retrieve back to the junction where the concrete path suddenly deteriorates into a rugged mountain path, and that leads towards deep into the woods. Not until long, be sure to look for some ribbons tied to the bushes. This is a junction through a rather hidden path that leads to the broken concrete dam of Po Kwu Wan, an area of transquil and quietness beneath crystal clear waters. It was said that the concrete dam is used for fishing during the old days.

It is quite challenging to cross over the concrete dam, as parts of it is broken and required to climb over the railings of the dam. But the experience itself is interesting and rewarding. Upon reaching the other side of the dam, the hidden path rejoins the trail, and soon reach another junction. Be sure to head over the ascending path, as otherwise it will eventually resolved into heavy bushes and a narrow path that is difficult to walk through. This ascending path will eventually rejoin the Sheung Yiu Country Trail. Enjoy this part of the hike with beautiful views of the West Dam, and the path eventually ends with a stack of descending stairs, leading to the main road as well as the entrance to the High Island Reservoir West Dam, another scenic area. This is where the hiking ends, and can then go back to Sai Kung city center by taxi, or hike 3km along the main road back to Pak Tam Chung, where you can take a bus back to Sai Kung .

Distance: 5km from Pak Tam Chung to West Dam/another 3km if hike back to Pak Tam Chung afterwards.

Northeast New Territories Hikes - a taste of the remote Hakka villages of Hong Kong

Route : Wu Kau Teng(烏蛟騰) - A Ma Wat(亞媽笏) - Mui Tze Lam Village(梅子林) - Lai Chi Wo Village(荔枝窩) - Sam A Tsuen Village(三椏村) - Sam A Chung Wetland(三椏涌) - Sheung Miu Tin(上苗田) - Kau Tam Tso Village(九担租) - Wu Kau Teng(烏蛟騰)

This hike is surely one of my favorites, as you get to explore one of the most remote areas of Hong Kong, seeing untouched Hakka villages, trying exotic foods, and seeing transquil inland harbours and beautiful wetland scenery. This hike will surely get you amazed.

Starting from Wu Kau Teng, you will first walk up stairs along a rugged mountain path north towards A Ma Wat, where you began to descend downhill, not until long, you will reach the village of Mui Tze Lam, a mostly abandoned village but due to recent renovation, the village walls were painted with many different decorations. The hiking path is paved from here, where you will continue a short walk towards the coast, and not until long you will reach Lai Chi Wo, one of the largest Hakka settlements of northeastern New Territories.

The Hakkas are early immigrants to the south of China, or Hong Kong, where they originated from the north of the country. They mostly stayed together in fortified villages, and bring with them their traditional food and lifestyle. Lai Chi Wo village is one of those villages. Even though most of the villagers has left for the city, there remains a few of them who enjoy the unique scenery of the village, and also doing business with the tourists who flocked here by ferry every weekends.

Lai Chi Wo is also full of natural floras, including a hollow-holed tree, hundred years old tree with long and curved kitos, as well as several heavily fortified trees with long reached roots. Beneath the coastline is a wetland area overlook the beautiful Yan Chau Tong (Double Haven) inland Harbour, where the former Prince Charles has spent a night in his own private yacht, overlooking the beautiful remote islands and tranquil waters. The hike continues to an Overlook Pavillion, a few stairs uphill where you can overview the Yan Chau Tong (or Double Haven) inland harbour, with its many remote islands right in front of your eyes, and here you continue to hike to Sam A Tsuen, famous for its authentic Hakka restaurants, where you will settle down and have a deliciously cooked Hakka lunch.

After lunch, the hike continues to Sam A Tsuen Pier, in my opinion, the most scenic place to get a glimpse of the Double Haven area, and the hike continues through photo scenic spots of village houses, golden bulrush fields and mountain scenery. Not until long the paved hiking path resolved into a rugged mountain path again, and you will reach Sam A Chung, where the wetland bushes grow beneath mountain ranges, where trees changes its colors according to the seasons. The hike then continue back towards Wu Kau Teng, with a smooth uphill, passing through a scenic rocked area where you can look for a heart - shaped rock formation. Here is the former village of Sheung Miu Tin, but it is largely abandoned and even the village houses has disappeared into the woods.

Right before coming back to Wu Kau Teng, here is the last village of Kau Tam Tso, and in the winter times, the leaves of the trees will turn red, with views of a foliage, resembles a very photogenic view.

The hike then continue through Lo So Shing, a tiny fishing village where the trail begins to ascend, all the way until you reach the Lamma Island Lookout Pavillion. There, you can see the famous electric power station and the village of Hung Shing Ye and Yung Shue Wan began to appear upon your eyes. Here the path begins to descend and soon you reach Hung Shing Ye Beach, where you can dive in and have a swim

After leaving Hung Shing Ye, the path continue inward towards Yung Shue Wan, the biggest village in Lamma Island, ans the hike concludes here. If you still have an urge to hike longer, you can continue uphill towards Tai Peng, where the hiking path continues to reach the northernmost village of Lamma Island - Pak Kok Village, where the trails end in a ferry Pier, with scheduled Kai To (small, privately run ferry) will bring you back to Aberdeen in the south of Hong Kong Island.
