The Swamp is a place that seems to be forgotten by everyone. On our last visit, Edil Mendez and I listened as residents shared their frustration—every politician comes through with promises, but none follow through. Their water and garbage issues remain unresolved. The focus is always on roads leading to tourist areas, justified by the need to keep the island’s economy running. Yet, administration after administration has come and gone, and The Swamp, home to native islanders, remains unchanged. So what’s the real issue?

According to the locals, the only politician in a position within the municipality of Roatan who has genuinely helped them is Jimmy Connor.

Our campaign’s photographer happens to be big aviation fan. Check out what he wrote about the airport in Utila.

This is one of our top projects. Utila’s development depends on its tourism and this airport is highly important.

Visiting the Garífuna community in Santos Guardiola for reasons other than coming for machuca or to enjoy the nightlife on Sunday nights, was an interesting experience, not only because of the warmth and strength of its people but also because of the contrast between their resilience and the neglect they endure. Despite their historical and cultural significance, the authorities have done little to support this ethnic group. The lack of government investment is particularly evident in this municipality, which struggles financially because it doesn’t generate as much revenue as other areas. However, the taxes that flow from the municipality to the mainland should account for this disparity and ensure a fair distribution of resources. Instead, the Garífuna seem to serve as little more than a cultural emblem—celebrated in speeches and tourism promotions, yet largely forgotten when it comes to actual development and infrastructure.

And yet, despite the odds, the Garífuna have preserved their language, traditions, and way of life. Their culture is alive in their music, dance, and community gatherings. But the challenges they face go beyond economic hardships. One story that stood out to me was about their only cemetery, a resting place for the very first Garífuna ancestors to arrive in Central America. A local woman shared how they have to walk through mud to visit their loved ones, an indignity for a site that should be a historical landmark. This revelation led me to bring the issue to the Preservation Society, which is still in its legal formation phase. However, ensuring the protection and restoration of this sacred burial ground is at the top of our priorities. The Garífuna have fought to maintain their identity for centuries, it’s important that they receive the respect and support they need.

The Bay Islands Native Identity series is officially moving forward, and I’m excited to share a quick update with you all!

Filming will begin in a few weeks, and the series will be airing this year. The channel that will broadcast it nationwide has also secured alliances that will allow it to be seen on television in Europe and the United States of America.

Everyone involved in this project has really felt the love we have for the Bay Islands and has understood just how important it is to preserve our history and culture. The content of each episode been well received by many, and seeing that support has meant a lot.

There’s still not much I can reveal, but what little I can, I’m honored to share with you. Looking forward to sharing more soon!

In many countries, corruption takes on many faces, but one of the most overlooked yet widespread practices is the act of offering money, free services, or products in exchange for votes. While this might seem like an age-old practice, it is a direct attack on democracy and a reflection of the lengths some politicians will go to secure power.

Over the past few months, I have toured the Bay Islands, speaking with locals about their experiences during this election season. What I have learned is both shocking and, in some cases, hopeful. The reality is that many politicians are paying large sums to communities to buy their votes, often enlisting intermediaries to distribute the money and even pressuring individuals to influence their families and friends. This is corruption, plain and simple.

However, what has stood out to me in this election is the shift in mindset among islanders. Many people have openly shared that while they are taking the money being handed out by corrupt politicians, they will ultimately vote for the candidate they believe is best suited for the role. This quiet act of defiance is something that has made me immensely proud. Islanders are recognizing that their votes hold power, and they refuse to let money dictate their choices.

This reminded me of a story I learned in church about a decade ago that made me laugh. The story went like this: Many years ago, the Church of Satan decided to send a Christian lady a basket of fruits and goods. They knocked on her door and said, "Here, we brought you a basket of all kinds of fruit, but it is from the Church of Satan. Would you like to receive it?" She took it and was very happy. They then asked, "If you're a Christian, why did you take it from the Church of Satan?" She explained, "Because when the Lord wants to bless you, He will use anyone. God bless you."

Now, this is my personal opinion, but I see nothing wrong with taking money from corrupt politicians as long as you cast your vote based on who you truly believe will serve the community best. The money being distributed is not only coming from the pockets of these politicians—it is often from questionable people who will later on charge them for the favor in ways that will not be "convenient" for the communities. However, what must always be remembered is this: Any politician who offers you money for your vote is corrupt, no matter who they are or what they promise.

When a candidate is honest and genuine, they present themselves with their ideals and projects for the community they wish to represent. They do not need to manipulate or buy their way into power. They do not take advantage of the poor's hunger to secure votes.

True democracy thrives when people vote based on informed decisions, not financial incentives. The power of change lies in the hands of the people, and as voters, it is our responsibility to break the cycle of corruption by choosing leaders based on merit, vision, and a genuine commitment to the community.

This election season, take the money if you must, feed your family—but vote with your conscience.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be conducting and sharing a personal analysis on product pricing in Guanaja.

During a recent visit to a small store named “Sea Mart: Grocery Store” in the community of Mangrove Bight, I took note of several product prices that stood out to me. To better understand the cost of living on the island, I’ll be comparing these prices with the same products in Roatan and Tegucigalpa to see just how different they are and why many say Guanaja is the most expensive of the three Bay Islands.

This is one of the many small personal projects I take on to understand the Bay Islands better. There are many factors that influence pricing, from transportation costs to availability and demand.

While this analysis may be simple, to me, it’s a step toward understanding the economic reality of the island and how it affects its residents. I’ll be sharing my findings soon as well as photographs of all products taken into account in all three locations, so we can all learn a little more about Guanaja’s costs.

Over the weekend I got to visit this very beautiful new restaurant in the Camp Bay Area in Santos Guardiola, called CliffSides. Not only is it a beautiful place to enjoy your day but the food is outstanding.

This restaurant belongs to two North Americans that moved to the island of Roatan. The portions on each dish are large and just as enjoyable. The view of the ocean from this place is impressive and they also have an area over the sea where you can go for a walk and take photographs at.

They are open Friday through Sunday from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM. You’ll find it passing La Sirena de Camp Bay. It was so good it’s definitely worth the share ✨
