Smiljan, what to see

Smiljan, a small village in the mountainous Lika in Croatia, is a home to the most famous and respected inventor, engineer and scientist in the world – Nikola Tesla.

Nikola Tesla, a person who brought so much to the word and the way of life we live today. Tesla coil, the magnifying transmitter, turbine and induction motor are just some of his inventions.

Tesla was a futurist who knew what the future brings, so he envisioned a system that’ll collect information and broadcast it to a hand-held device. And was he right – nowadays, all of us have a mobile phone with an internet connection in our hands. He also envisioned the technology for radio astronomy as well as X-rays.

His home town, Smiljan, is located in the central part of Velebit mountain and not far from the Adriatic Sea. It’s a perfect place to visit if you want to enjoy the green fields and hills as well as go for a swim in the sea.

The ruins of the former Krka hydroelectric plan are found at Skradinski buk, in the very centre of Krka National Park.

It was constructed and began operations in 1895, just two days after Tesla’s hydroelectric plant on Niagara Falls became operational. At the same time, 11 km of power lines to transmit electricity and a city lighting network were built, the first complete electricity system in Croatia. Thanks to Šibenik Mayor Ante Šupuk and engineer Vjekoslav Meischner, Šibenik had electrical lighting before many European cities, including Vienna, Budapest, Rome, London and others. Ten years later, Ante Šupuk built a second hydroelectric plant, Jaruga, just a hundred metres downstream from the first. Following the installation of additional turbines in 1936, the plant is still in function today.

Due to the historical significance, the Krka hydroelectric plant is protected as a monument of industrial architecture. Restoration works are currently in place, aimed at conservation and presentation of the plant.

The great inventor, physicist and discoverer was born on July 10 1856 in the village of Smiljan, and his birth house was turned into a memorial center, Along with the interpretation of Tesla’s life, the landscape of Tesla’s identification is also presented, the native land whence Tesla came and which shaped Tesla as the great inventor that he was. The Memorial Center is the place where this genius made his first steps toward the greatest world-altering accomplishments.

The Center was created in such a way that it unites culture, science and tourism. The visitors can learn a little more about Tesla and enjoy the intact Lika nature which stimulated Tesla to create his first inventions.

The permanent exhibition can be found in the birth house where the life road and the genius of Tesla are presented in picture, word and sound. The time line enables the visitor to read the most interesting information about his life, as well as other significant events in Croatia and the rest of the world during that period. The lighted drawers offer information to read about the interesting personality of the inventor. You can also listen to an audio recording of La Guardia, the then Mayor of New York, talking about Nikola Tesla.

The attic of the house is adapted in a modern style. Some of Tesla’s inventions are exposed there: the induction motor, the Tesla’s turbine, the Tesla coil, and the rotating magnetic field (Columbus Egg), all of which can be manually activated by visitors with a press on the switch.

The tour of the Center includes also a presentation of a documentary film about the great genius, and a demonstration including the Tesla coil in the replica of his Colorado Springs laboratory.

Nikola Tesla’s Early Years
Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a priest in the Serbian Orthodox church and his mother managed the family’s farm.
Tesla studied math and physics at the Technical University of Graz and philosophy at the University of Prague. In 1882, while on a walk, he came up with the idea for a brushless AC motor, making the first sketches of its rotating electromagnets in the sand of the path. Later that year he moved to Paris and got a job repairing direct current (DC) power plants with the Continental Edison Company. Two years later he immigrated to the United States.
