Built from 1438 to 1440, the Big Onofrio's Fountain is a sixteen-sided container with a cupola, and was one of the ending points of the aqueduct system. Each of the sixteen sides has a unique "maskeron" design (stone-carved masked face) with the faucet projecting out of the mouth of the each design. Unfortunately the maskerons have been damaged during one of the recent repairs done to the fountain. The fountain's cupola was made by Petar Martinov from Milan. However, the fountain was also partly damaged by the earthquake in 1667 hence the current look is missing a dragon statue that had once been on top of the cupola.

A 16 century plauge doctor mask.
Plauge doctors treated victims of bubonic plauge. The masks were eerily designed and instantly recognizable. The beak of the mask was filled with smelling mint, rose petals or other flowers which were meant to decrease the scent of death, dying people and decaying bodies. The mask had glass eye openings and the wearer would be carrying a cane, to examine patients without making direct phisical contact. The plauge carried 95%mortality rate, so these physicians would just diagnose the patient without any resource to treatment.

Marin Ghetaldi, a famous Ragusan scientist (1568 - 1626) - a sign on the entrance of his house says: "Be far away, envy, fights, vanity and worry! Peace and serenity are caves, parks and rocks!
Betina cave under his house, where he performed most of his experiments is named after the nickname he was given- Bete.

The Old Pharmacy in Franciscan Monastery is one among the oldest pharmacies in Europe.
It was founded in 1317, operating till today.
In this beautiful courtyard you can see the old pharmacy as a museum and just in front of the entrance a new one, where pharmacists still mix some of the body and face cremes by the centuries old recipes.

The time period between the 14th and 18th centuries was known as the most difficult time of plauge and cholera epidemics in Europe and Asia.
On July 27, 1377, the Great Council of the Republic adopted a decree which introduced a quarantine as a measure of protection against the spread of infectious diseases by which all merchants, sailors, and goods arriving from "suspicious lands" could not enter the city if they haven't spent 40days in a quarantine
By the mid-15th century, quarantines have become complex institutes that employed scribe, two guards, gravedigger and two cleaners.
In 1590, the government started with the construction of the lazaretto in Ploče. It contained 10 multistory buildings (5 for goods, 5 for people) connected by 5 interior courtyards. With the construction of the lazarettos, epidemics were significantly suppressed.

During the time of Ragusa Republic, a special law was in place. The law stated that whenever the Jugo or Sirocco blew, no Council session or decisions or laws were allowed to take place. Even the crimes committed during heavy southerly winds were treated with more leniency.

Some people use St. John's wort directly on the skin to treat bruises, sprains, and wounds, or take it by mouth in an effort to boost immunity. Its most common use is to relieve depression and anxiety. This kind of usage dates from medieval times and was often prescribed in Dubrovnik's for such usage.

This is Daksa. Idylic little island near Dubrovnik that hides a story you would only hear in whispers from locals. In the aftermath of WWII, rooting out remaining N***s and N**i-sympathizers became almost an act of nationalist pride in some European countries. Unfortunately for the victims of the Daksa Massacre of 1944, this anti-N**i frenzy turned into more of an angry mob that took the lives of dozens of people without trial. On October 18th of that year, Yugoslav partisans entered the coastal Croatian city of Dubrovnik and arrested hundreds of citizens on suspicion of being N**i sympathizers. Just days later, without trial or review, the partisan enforcers rowed as many as 53 (although some accounts say that number could be almost twice as much) of the accused to the small island of Daksa just off the shore and shot them down. The bodies were simply left to rot on the island, laying where they fell. Among the dead were Dubrovnik’s priest and mayor.
