Zeleni vir (Green whirpool) is as strong spring, located at the bottom of a shallow cave at the foot of a 70 meters high cliff. Two creeks collapse from the top of that cliff. One quickly disappears into the notch and the other collapses vertically in the form of a waterfall that falls in front of the cave with a small lake and flows into the creek that springs inside the cave.
A special attraction of this protected area is the lush beauty of the forest vegetation that has surrounded the entire landscape.

"The Devil’s passage, one of the most beautiful canyons in Gorski kotar mountain area, about 800 meters long, in some parts only 2 meters wide, is the result of action of water that has “eaten” the stone for thousands of years and made an unusual path. The creek Jasle flows through the canyon. At the end of Devil's Passage, 14 meters above the creek there is the entrance into the cave Muževa hiša. The cave length is about two hundred meters, it is very narrow and without artificial lights. Inside the cave, strictly protected species of bats hibernates, and they should not be disturbed when you visit the cave."

Karlovac

Croatian people love to give their towns nicknames. If you ask us about a town that lies on four rivers we’ll all respond - Karlovac. However, its inhabitants will often joke that Karlovac lies on five rivers – fifth one being Karlovačko beer.

One of the main attractions in Karlovac area is Aquatika aquarium that presents rich fauna of those rivers in a rather interesting manner. Walking through the aquarium you are following the flow of a river – from its source to its mouth. Once you get aquainted with the ‘underground’ part, it’s time to check it out from above.

Situated on a hill near Karlovac there is a 15th century castle that once belonged to powerful Croatian noble families Frankopan and Zrinski. The castle was renovated and adapted to host a bar and a museum. After climbing the highest tower you'll be able to enjoy a panoramic view of Karlovac over a glass of Karlovačko beer, of course.

The list of the most popular places in Croatia isn't complete without its capital city – Zagreb.

Coincidentally, tomorrow is City of Zagreb Day when people of Zagreb celebrate feast of Our Lady of the Stone Gate – its patron saint.

In year 1731 a devastating fire damaged a lot of buildings in Zagreb. Stone gate (main entrance to the city) was devoured by flames, but among its ruins a painting lied miraculously intact - painting of Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. It had immediately become an item of worship which is why decision was made to place it inside a chapel within the restored town gate, turning its passage into a place of worship.

Still to this day, you can see locals and tourists alike having a prayer in front of Virgin Mary of the Stone gate.

Ston

Ston is a small town in the southern part of Pelješac peninsula, just an hour's ride from Dubrovnik. Although small in size, its economic importance throughout history was anything but.

Advantages of that area were recognized by ancient Romans who started with salt exploitation as early as the 2nd century BC. Salt production was revived in the 14thcentury when Republic of Dubrovnik bought the entire peninsula.

Back in the day, producing salt was a very lucrative business (it made 1/3 of the republic’s total income), so it was extremely important for people of Dubrovnik to keep it in their hands. That's why they protected it with defensive walls that stretch for 5,5 km. Those who decide to climb the longest preserved stone wall in Europe will be rewarded with the magnificent view of the saltworks and oyster farms!

Pelješac peninsula is famous for its high-quality wine production. If you don’t have time to visit one of its many vineyards, make sure you enjoy a glass of red Dingač or white Pošip wine as the sun sets behind the Ston walls.

Dubrovnik

Lately everybody associates Dubrovnik with the award-winning HBO series Game of Thrones. Walking down the alleyways of Dubrovnik, you’ll notice a number of GoT-themed walking tours and specialized stores. Be careful though, if you dive too deep into this fictional drama, you might miss out on all of the real-life drama that played out on its streets over the course of centuries.

For over 450 years Dubrovnik was a city-state known as the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa). It was governed by three councils and a rector, elected once every month (!) to prevent corruption. Being a successful, trade-oriented naval power, Dubrovnik posed a big threat to Venetian domination in eastern Adriatic.

Caught between the Venetians in the west and Ottomans in the east, they managed to retain independency, mostly thanks to their skilled diplomats. The motto of the republic was “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro”, which can be translated as “Liberty is not to be sold for all the gold in the world”.

Impressive two-kilometer long stone wall, reinforced by fortresses and towers, encloses the old town. Visitors can walk all along these walls that stand witness to Dubrovnik’s glorious past.

If you’re still not intrigued about this place check out the trailer of Croatian series “The Republic: History of Dubrovnik” on the link below.

NP Mljet

Mljet is not just any island in the Adriatic Sea. Among more than 60 inhabited islands in Croatia Mljet is in fact the greenest one. Western part of this green oasis was proclaimed a national park in 1960, making it the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean Sea.

Park trails stretch through the Mediterranean forest and all along two lakes – Malo and Veliko jezero. In the middle of Veliko jezero there is an islet of St. Mary with a church and Benedictine monastery from the 13th century. A local park guide will not only help you get in touch with the island history and everyday life of locals, but also present you with various curiosities concerning the park and its maintenance.

The park is easily reachable by catamaran from Split or Dubrovnik making it a great option for a day trip!

Every Saturday we’ll be describing one of the most popular destinations and attractions in Croatia and every Sunday we’ll bring you those that we consider deserve more attention.

NP Plitvice lakes

With over 1,5 million visitors per year, Plitvice lakes is the most popular national park in Croatia. It consists of 16 lakes of different sizes, all interconnected by waterfalls and cascades. Last few months due to the covid-19 virus the park was closed for public. This week it has opened its gates, again inviting you to enjoy its wonderful lakes and waterfalls at a discount price.

This year, on this special day, instead of walking down the busy Riva promenade, we are walking down the memory lane. Pictured are some of the stands (that usually decorate Riva on St. Domnius Day) selling traditional products that are made of local stone or wood. Klepetalo, a wooden toy (third photo) is arguably the most iconic symbol of this festivity. Few claps with its wings bring me back to my childhood.

Ivana Brlić Mažuranić was a Croatian children's writer and a four-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her characters were often based in Croatian oral literature and Slavic mythology, most popular one being Malik Tintilinić – good natured little house spirit. Thank you, Ivana, for making our childhoods a bit more magical, and happy birthday to you!

The origin of quarantine
..rules envisaged that travelers and tradesmen coming from regions affected with leprosy, plague or other diseases must stay at least 20 days in isolation. The time limit later was extended to 40 days, or ‘quaranta’ in Italian, giving the practice its future name.

Richter's skyscrapers, popularly known as Rakete (engl. rockets), represent a tremendous example of Croatian brutalist architecture. Built after disastrous Skopje earthquake in 1963., their construction was reinforced so they can better sustain earthquakes. Interestingly enough, they weren't named after Charles Francis, the inventor of Richter's scale, but after Vjenceslav Richter, chief architect.

Just few hours ago Zagreb area was struck by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3. Luckily, only infrastructural damage has been reported so far. Naturally, everybody was instructed to leave their homes in case of their collapse. In these difficult times we are proud of our fellow citizens who kept their cool and maintained appropriate distance between themselves.
