Sometimes I think that magic is elusive, some invented story that belongs only to children. But then I realize that we adults are the ones who create magic for ourselves—those sparkling moments of joy—when our hearts know how to recognize and embrace each small, wondrous moment around us. In the end, it is from our hands that children learn, for the very first time, how magic is built and shared.
And who all takes part in that grand, magical project of growing up? Nursery teachers, primary school teachers, all those people who so devotedly guide our children through the world. Just think: how many times have your children come home with a twinkle in their eyes, delighted by something they learned, crafted, or created? While listening to them excitedly retell their new adventures in the car, maybe you even felt a little awkward because you didn’t know all those fascinating facts yourself. Still, your heart smiles at the thought that someone else is creating their magic while you can work without worry.
But for those who are called to create magic for children to do their work uninterrupted, someone has to provide the conditions for it. That role belongs to politics—whether we like it or not. Maybe one day someone will surprise me, and I’ll be able to say, “Look, this person entered politics solely out of noble intentions, out of pure altruism.” But even I don’t really believe in that fairytale…
Nevertheless, fairytales do exist. I see them in children’s eyes when they recognize the magic we adults have woven into their world. And that is worth every story, every effort, every smile. That is precisely why we must never stop believing that we are all called to build those fairytales—so that one day, when they grow up, they can continue creating the same magic for a new generation of bright little eyes.
