Flavours of Hungary - FRUIT SOUP
Cold fruit soup may sound like a dessert, but it is not (although sometimes it can be) - it is a dish you can have any time of the year, for lunch or dinner as a soup - but since it is usually served cold, best to eat in hot summers. How about a try next time you are in Hungary?

Wonders of Hungary - Vajdahunyad Castle, Budapest
The Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyadvár) is one of the most popular landmarks in Budapest; it is in the City Park. It is not a real castle: it was built in the 19th century to commemorate the thousand-year-old Hungarian architecture by recalling motifs of important buildings. Originally, it was made out of cardboard and wood, but as it became popular, they decided to rebuild it of lasting materials in the first decade of the 20th century; this is the version we see today. It hosts the Museum of Agriculture and many, many open-air festivals in its court and in the immediate surroundings. It gives a fantastic backdrop to the Ice Rink and Boating Lake for romantic occasions. Undoubtedly, this complex is one of the Wonders of Hungary.

Wonders of Hungary - Geological Park and Museum of Bauxite Mining, Gánt
If you are interested in Martian adventures without leaving the Earth, Gánt is a great place to go.
The once-quarry's red soil is something really out of this world. It is an excellent example of turning industrial landmarks into something educative and precious. You find a museum about bauxite mining too, so if you are curious about where the aluminium in your household originates, visit this place.

Wonders of Hungary - Gemenc Forest
Gemenc forest is an almost undisturbed sea of green in the southern part of Hungary. It is well-known for its rich flora and fauna and a popular destination for those who want to get away from the noisy everyday life. You can hike and row here, but mostly learn a lot about nature. And if you meet the precious dwellers of these woods, please keep in mind: they are not there to entertain you; you are their guest on their land.

Wonders of Hungary - Castle of Boldogkő
Boldogkő Castle stands on a steep rock ridge in the Zemplén Mountains. In addition to the fortress, there are exhibitions, e.g. a record-breaking lead figurine collection showing historical battles. There are also medieval duel re-enactment shows and the main attraction: the iconic lookout point, which is perhaps the best-known and most popular point of the castle.

Wonders of Hungary - Castle of Szigliget
Szigliget Castle, being one of the Balaton fortresses, was a witness to turbulent times in the era of Ottoman wars. It is one of the best-preserved among these fortifications in the area; what's more, it was recently renovated, displaying the past centuries with a high-quality exhibition. And the view is simply breathtaking, so climbing to the highest points of Szigliget is highly recommended, even for those who are less interested in history.

Wonders of Hungary - Festetics Palace, Keszthely
The Festetics Palace in Keszthely is an excellent choice for our Wonders of Hungary series: besides its imposing Baroque architecture and park, all the buildings of the estate are full of interesting exhibits (e.g. a carriage museum, a palm house, miniature railways, birds and the largest unharmed noble library in Europe). Visitors love this place - and maybe not just for its features but for the proximity of Lake Balaton too: the beach is in just walking distance.

Wonders of Hungary - Krishna Valley, Somogyvámos
The Krishna Valley is located in Somogyvámos, southward from Lake Balaton, and is home to an eco-community that maintains a cultural centre and an organic farm. Their important attractions are their church, a dairy farm, their beekeeping facilities and many other lovely things related to local handicrafts. Their most important event each year is the Krishna Valley Village Festival, when the place turns into a colourful parade, and the visitors can taste delicious dishes. Wonders of Hungary - National Botanic Garden, Vácrátót
The National Botanic Garden in Vácrátót dates back to the 1870s, and these days, it has the largest plant collection among this kind of museums in Hungary. It is amazing as a landscape too, so a great place to have a relaxing walk, even if you are not into horticulture and forestry but still appreciate the proximity of green. Many of its details are fairytale-like, so it undoubtedly belongs to the Wonders of Hungary.

Wonders of Hungary - Orfű Lakes
The Orfű lake system, with a surface of 113 hectares, was built in the 1960s to create a holiday resort in the Pécs area where both beachgoers and fishermen can find their joy. In addition, there are several ethnographic sights and natural treasures next to these artificial lakes, so the experiences of a visit are not limited to the pleasures the shores offer. At the beginning of every summer, the Fishing on Orfű music festival is held here, which usually features the best of the Hungarian alternative scene, but this resort is also worth visiting at any other time. In this episode of Wonders of Hungary, we did so; join us in front of your screens!

This oxbow lake in Szarvas was cut off from the River Körös, and it has become a defining part of the city. Following its path you can see countless local wonders: natural, architectural and cultural attractions are lined up next to each other on the shore, and the best way to visit these places if you approach them on the water.
