A king, a tennis player and a dead horse

Alright, bear with me for this one. . back in spring I saw a video about a pretty courtyard with a pair of abstract sculptures guarding the staircases that I really wanted to see in person. When I accidentally made it inside a couple of months later, the real-life version did not disappoint, so I wanted to dig up some more info. Thanks to meselohazak.hu I found out that this art deco work is by a sculptor named Miklós Szűts Krivácsi who actually lived in this eclectic house from 1914.
According to the blog, Béla Kehrling, Hungary’s most famous tennis player at that time, invited King Gustav V. of Sweden to Budapest. We’re talking about a tall, lean, elderly but really athletic Swedish king who was a well-known figure across Europe in the years before the Second World War. During his reign from 1907 to 1950, he was known for wearing a white hat and glasses – but he never wore a crown (he was probably too busy playing tennis). Mr G. preferred to play doubles and as it seems, taking the stairs instead of using elevators. The janitor’s granddaughter offered to accompany him inside the elevator but he allegedly opted to take the stairs instead. Guess you can never get enough cardio. Or interesting stories.
During the siege, the inhabitants hid in the air raid shelter. They didn’t have more to eat than half a cup of dry corn, so they shot a horse and ate it. It was buried there, its bones may still be there..
