Show me sand, loess and clay and I bring you to . We spent a lovely afternoon in this tiny wine village on the less known countryside of Hungary. Our aim was to visit finally the as we heard about them a lot-their wines are on the menu list of some Michelin star restaurants in Budapest, and also tasted some, but what we got was unexpected. First class hospitality service by the owner(home baked bread, chees plate and jam) high level presentation of the wines. And then the wines...I can’t mention a ‘not bad’ one. One of my favourite was this Olaszrizling with a hint of exotic smell but also the typical sour almond appeared at the end. I tasted several beautiful reds also so I need to summarize them in a longer article...will keep you on the loop 😉

Long for the busy days, but still love the peaceful home’s atmosphere. As I organise myself a Riesling tasting week, I am going on with a unique winery from . Terroir appears in every sip, medium (+) acidity is normal for this white, but the notable body brings this very well. Pure citrus notes, in the nose, appearance and on the palate too. Lemon zest for a long finish, nicely ends into a complex wine. We visited several times the with family and friends too which offers you plenty of leisure activities as the winery is situated in the middle of a spectacular botanical garden with a delightful Lake Balaton view.

Summer is almost knocking on our door. Why not start the season with a fresh but also fierce Riesling? I tasted several times this exceptional white from from but somehow I had now the deepest impression of this Riesling, vintage 2015. Citrus and green apple accompagnied by the typical but not too harsh petrol smell in the nose. Pleasant fruity to start with, medium (+) body and acidity, grass and green apple on the palate. As this wine is at its best now, shows you all the elegant and typical characteristics of this type.

Gaming.Playing.Tasting. Fresh, half ripened apricot starts to occur in the nose then develope into exotic fruits such as green mango and lichee. Apricot appears on the palate as well with a medium body and medium (-) acids. Crispy sip fulls my mouth, drink on super low temp. A hint of skin touch gives an elegant pinkish colour and some plus extract content to this Pinot Grigio from Hungary, vintage 2019.

StayhomeSauvignon...with family. Now come the twists and turns: I should say just the pure facts about this wine but can’t stand to express my surprise as well. I tasted it at a blind tasting, I guessed immediately the type and well determined I said the country - New Zealand, they said no, then ok - Chile or Argentina....no, came the answer. Then what? Hungary, from Pécs. Nowaaaay! Yess. Ripened pear, red apple, peach and grass in the nose, pleasant acidity and white fruits. Perfect!

Out of the blue, I discovered this tiny winery called Heiner from Balf, , . This Olaszrizling is just so typical and complex you cannot miss it. Mixed flowers bouquet appeared with the fresh citrus notes. Remarkable alc (14% ) meets with notable acids to give a full pleasant but also not too heavy white. I paired it with pheasant soup for a birthday party, was a terrific memory of the dinner.

Italian background / Hungarian soil / German type. All of these in this one great Riesling from from Tolna wine region. Choose this wine region for whites with notable body and elegant reds with rounded tannins thanks to the high hours of the sunshine.

Where are you Spring? Sun is shining but still inside is better. Found relief with Birtokbor 2018. Warm gold colour shines from my glass and the hot brioche smell makes me smile. Sweet peach and pear with notable body finishes in every sip. Highly recommended for any occasion!

Last bottle of this red miracle from my shelf from Bläufrankisch 2000. Full body and vibrant tannins were accompanied by pure ripened black fruits. However no time left for this balance, on the top of its age.

Sauvignon Sunday Brunch! For this occasion I tasted Sauvignon Blanc vintage 2019. We are a fanatic of this area, the winery is located in the middle of a nature reserve, next to Lake Balaton more exactly in Káli Basin. Grape comes from the volcanic slopes of the monadnock around the winery. Terroir and type characteristics appear at once in the wine, in case of this vintage I feel its 70-30% in favour of the terroir. Chrystal clear appearance with a hint of lemon smell. Pronounced acidity with medium body, green pear and apple come as secunder notes.

Smiling Saturday morning from Rust, Austria! Look there are barrels and bottles everywhere, what a beautiful sight. This tiny town just next to the Hungarian border is the center of our favourite wineregion outside of our country. However historically this wineregion linked to the Hungarian one around Sopron they are now separated just by the border. The micro-climate is moderate thanks to the effects of the Lake Neusiedl. It means that on winter time temperature doesn’t drop too low and autumn is moderate for longer time than on the other areas around. Choose this wine region if you like pronounced acidity in white wines or would like to try medium to full bodied, high tannins reds. Most popular red is the Blauburger which shows its best face here!

Can’t stop tasting 😊 I need to try to text faster...let me introduce now just one red, an exceptional wine from N.A.G. winery Syrah vintage 2018 from . This wine is that one we need to talk about! Super dark colour, jammy style in the nose, liquorice smell appears. This year was so hot the grape could fully ripened. I can remember that the same Syrah from 2016 still needs time. But not this one. Elegant rounded tannins, high of alc(15%) smooth finish. An excellent wine. There are plenty of reasons to visit the Mátra wineregion, here is one, go ahead!

It can be Summer or Winter and even Spring or Autumn. To visit Lake Balaton is always a good decision. The whole wineregion consists of six parts so you can easily find fiery whites with high acidy and fresh fruity reds too. Not to mention the beautiful and super clear Lake which is the biggest one in Central Europe. Come and join us on a winetour in any season!

Ad-lib wine tasting after our fast visit to Mór wine region in Hungary. I tried two types - a Grünerveltliner from vintage 2018 and a Sauvignon Blanc from vintage 2017. Both were perfect choice as these two whites reflect a proper way to the terroir characteristics. Elegant, high acids with a medium (+) body. Well ripened fruits and flowers appear at the background. Choose this wine region if you long for high acids white wines, reds are just there for show.

Re-taste of the full bodied Georg, vintage 2009 from the lovely winery which we tried with friends last summer at the winery. Well, at that moment I felt - around 11 pm, as last wine on the table that it’s beautiful but not a summer type. Full body, high of acids and tannins...needless to say more. Now, in January, timing was perfect with this wine. Very deep, ruby colour, earthy notes, wet wood, mushrooms and forest fruits in the nose. Super smooth sip, elegant tannins, acids are medium. Long finish, red berries, plum, jammy style on the palate. Beautiful red, at its best condition. Perfect pairing with an Argentinian steak!

In the middle of the cold winter time it’s just good to think back the lazy, hot summertime...of course with a glass of wine. So I chose for this evening from Sauvignon Blanc, vintage 2018. After a pronounced rhubarb in the nose, pear and white fruits appear on the palate, finish with lemon zest. It wasn’t available at the winery last August when we visited them, so I couldn’t wait to open this bottle and have some chat about last summer and plan the next one 😉
