After some long breaks and challenges we have managed to nearly complete our first lodge ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ
We just need to varnish all the wood and install the furniture. The end is in sight ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
We can now turn our attentions to the second room ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Day 62 - Final day
Thank you to these amazingly skilled builders that have created this beautiful room. Plus others not in the photo.
It isn't quite finished, but it will continue...
In the meantime the monkeys are moving in.
Terima kasih banyak

Day 63
Last push. Walls are starting to be fitted, bathroom tiled and window frames installed.
We only have a 2 days left until Romi has to leave so we have to leave the rooms unfinished. The builders are going to continue.
From the amazing work they have done so far and with contact through whatsapp we feel like it's manageable. We always knew it was an ambitious schedule so we have prepared as much as we can before Romi leaves.

It's looking like it's going to be a very quiet season for tourism here and globally.

Day 40
The pressure is on as February draws to a close, but it's beginning to get a bit exciting. The builders have been working very hard in extremely hot weather. They have started fitting the bamboo ceiling in preparation for the roof arriving on Friday. I can't wait to see that ๐Ÿ™†

Day 27
More progress. We're feeling a bit more hopeful although we're still behind.
Roof framework is nearly done, bathroom back wall is coming along and the location of the second room has been set. This room is smaller and simpler so it should be quicker to build. It's a nice distance from the other room and a bit more jungly. It still has a beautiful river view.

Day 14
Today a start was made on our waste management system. Basically a big hole with a concrete top. All human waste goes into this hole where it breaks down and disappears into the earth. The tropical climate accelerates this process so there is no smell. It's almost like a giant compost toilet.
Here is the hole and one of many massive rocks that had to be excavated. To liven things up here are some toads having a cuddle ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Day 8
The building inspector returns to check over the materials...
This orangutan is the off spring of an orangutan that was rehabilitated into the area of Bukit Lawang in the 1990s. As with most of the ex-rehabilitants, the mother is an ex pet and therefore has very little fear of humans. However, we always try and maintain a distance of 10 metres from all orangutans on our treks as per the National Park rules. Truly wild orangutans are very shy of humans and stay high in the forest canopy. We organise a 6 day wild orangutan trek each month where we are sometimes fortunate enough to spot some wild orangutans. Go to for more information

The goal...
๐ŸŒณTen years ago created this design for our Sumatran jungle trekking business
๐ŸŒณWe are finally going to build it!!
๐ŸŒณIt's likely to turn out a bit different to this amazing design. We only have a small budget and limited time to build. Only 2 and a half months ๐Ÿ˜ฌ But, we're aiming high and maybe we'll get close, or at least represent the original concept
๐ŸŒณWe want to build 2 individual lodges rather than one structure.
๐ŸŒณWe want to make it as sustainable and eco friendly as possible, using natural materials rather than concrete.
๐ŸŒณFollow us to see our progress, and if you have any input or ideas we're all ears ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿ‘‚
