Kawah Ijen – Where Fire Meets the Sky
Ready for one of the most surreal hikes of your life?
Kawah Ijen, an active volcano in East Java, is home to the largest acidic crater lake in the world and the famous electric-blue fire that glows in the darkness – a rare natural phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gases.
We start our journey from Bali in the afternoon and cross over to Java by night. The climb begins in the early hours of the morning, under a sky full of stars, and as you ascend, the blue flames begin to dance in the distance. By sunrise, you’ll witness the crater lake’s otherworldly turquoise color surrounded by smoky cliffs – a scene straight out of a dream.
Yourfitrip Day Program from Bali:
• 1:00 PM – Pickup from South Bali
• 4:00 PM – Ferry from Gilimanuk to Java
• 10:00 PM – Arrive at Ijen Base
• 1:00 AM – Start the hike (moderate difficulty, approx. 2 hours)
• 3:30 AM – Witness the blue fire
• 5:00 AM – Sunrise at the crater rim
• 7:00 AM – Descend and enjoy a local Javanese breakfast
• 10:00 AM – Return journey to Bali
This isn’t just a hike – it’s an inner journey. The silence of the night, the intensity of the climb, and the raw, volcanic energy all around push you to find stillness and strength within.
Nature always has something to say – you just have to show up and listen.
